Mountain Biking

I felt pretty good this morning so got the bike out for a ride and managed to get 5 miles in under 30 minutes, which has been a goal for a while! Finally got my average speed over 10mph. Whew!

@rasterweb I got 16.23 in today, good weather for riding. Will go for 20+ this weekend.

rasterweb,

@fistfulofdave Nice! My longest ride is still just 10 miles but I do hope to get further as the months progress. Weather was great, shorts & a t-shirt was perfect.

In which I write how I replaced Strava with my own private solution that does not depend on any cloud service.

And also some stories about the bikes I owned.

"Like to bike? Your knees will thank you and you may live longer, too

New research shows lifelong bikers have healthier knees, less pain and a longer lifespan, compared to people who've never biked. This adds to the evidence that cycling promotes healthy aging."

Has anyone here used the Avondale Road barely-marked "bike lanes" from around the Power Line Trail up to NE 132nd? Because on Google Maps they lack things like "this is a bike lane" markers except at the very, very end. Right now I've marked them as dual sharerows because of how bad they look to me. But are they secretly okay in person?

bls,
@bls@mas.to avatar

@moira I wouldn't ride a bike on Avondale unless I was feeling suicidal.

moira,
@moira@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

@bls Yeah, it looks scary as fuck. That's why I'm just refusing to mark it as double-bike-lane even though Redmond absolutely does.

I'm sticking with "double sharerow" marking for now, because paint stripe or not, you're sharing the row. :/

TIL that @organicmaps has a (very WIP, but still) desktop app, and so now I can produce side-by-side comparisons. Voilà the query for "café" in #Toulon

Note also how the information is shown much more explicitly on the OrganicMaps view. The google map only becomes useful to #bike / #pedestrian once you zoom all the way in. Somehow their designers seem to be afraid of contrast or sth. 🤷

I just love how #OSM is so much better, thanks to all involved! 🫶

Screenshot of the OrganicMaps desktop app showing the same down-town Toulon, with the same query "café". A bunch of places are highlighted, and the detail on the roads and the choice of colours makes the map much more useful to non-cars.

mmcm,
@mmcm@mastodon.social avatar

@organicmaps note that google returned only SIX results here. Out of which one is out of business and one is a duplicate. Which leaves us with four.

@organicmaps returned ~25 results, and while not all of them are strictly-speaking cafés, most of them would be fine to sit down for a coffee, or have an obvious relation like having "Café" in the name.

It's insane that google even fails to find shops like "Columbus Café" which is a french competitor to Starbucks, and which they do know about.

mmcm,
@mmcm@mastodon.social avatar

Note also that I as a user can (and do) use this map as a note-taking device: every time I find a shop that I'd like to re-visit, I make sure I have them on the map, incl opening hours and other contacts. @streetcomplete and @everydoor are great tools for this, but @organicmaps also allows doing this straight from the app! 😍

This way, every time I write some of this down for my own use, everyone can profit from it.

Why were most of the cyclists in this photo wearing masks in November 1977? Was it to avoid breathing polluted air?

If so, thank goodness we have the EPA now; I hope we can address modern threats to air quality, like climate change related wildfires, rather than giving up and letting the air become difficult to breathe again.

#masks #Philly #BikeAdvocacy #biking

skyfaller,
@skyfaller@jawns.club avatar

@oreoteeth Then would you say that it's odd they're still wearing masks in November, then? Would this have been after smog season?

Are they wearing the masks to make a point about how increasing bicycle use would reduce smog, rather than for practical reasons because it was actually smoggy that day?

This post has a pic of a 1977 protest, could be the same one? Nobody is wearing a mask because they are singing, although one man to the right has a mask under his chin: https://bicyclecoalition.org/launching-in-the-70s-the-bicycle-coalitions-first-decade/

oreoteeth,
@oreoteeth@jawns.club avatar

@skyfaller Well, we do get those freakishly warm fall days sometimes. It's def possible that there are smog days in the spring or fall. I mostly went to the Velodrome on summer nights. Couldn't say if LV cyclists were still masking in the fall.

And of course it's also possible that local industry smokestacks were pumping out more pollution than normal on that particular day.

The Cheshire Rail Trail goes from Keene, NH to Bellows Falls, VT but it looks faint and elusive the further you get from Keene. I'm checking out someone’s Street View, wondering if the family can/would try it, then I pan the camera down to see who’s riding it. ";^)
Shot in 2020, I wonder if the trail has had much work since?

https://www.alltrails.com/explore/map/cheshire-north-7476596

view of person making street view: a dad with two little kids in the back of his bike, one in bright green helmet the other pink
a section of trail with tree across it, the bike sits nearby as if Dad had everyone get off while he carried it across or around
looks like everyone’s heading back to bike after the tree portage section

Struggling to find an answer to this question on search:

My bicycle's back wheel won't roll backwards.

It isn't that it won't spin freely exactly - it spins fine forwards. It's just that when I try to roll the bike backwards it will not turn.

It's not to do with the pedals. I am talking about just rolling it along the ground. It used to work fine.

It's not an electric bike.

What can cause this??
