The organizers of @pycon have given community organizers a massive gift 🎁

Let's not squander it!

A sold out #PyConUS 2024 proved that even large events can prioritize safety and inclusion for caregivers and immunocompromised people by way of requiring masks, and gathering venue data to calibrate their policy from year-to-year. Smaller events have proven it's possible at that scale, too.

Now is the time for at least one other large event to step up.

Who will it be? 👀

@anniegreens @josh Interesting, I attended both 2022 and 2023 and that was definitely the case from what I saw!

josh,
@josh@josh.tel avatar

@yatil @anniegreens Ahhh I'm so happy to see XOXO's policy here! I've been bummed to see the dearth of robust Health & Safety practices at tech events in Europe.

PyCon IT and FOSS Backstage were good standouts, but have been relaxing their measures more than I would.

It may not be a relevant ecosystem for you (yet?), but I am pleased to report that Matrix Conf (Sept 19-22 in Berlin) will be raising the bar!

Taka myśl:
Kupuję samochód marki A.

Time, use and practice are key to switching OSes, platforms and apps: you get comfortable with what you use. A good start to moving away from Microsoft Windows might be to install Libre Office on Windows, and start learning to use that for your daily word processing, presentations and spreadsheets. Take some steps with open source software before you even have to tackle a new operating system.

So evidently Element now has screen sharing and voice chat integrated in an “always on” room. All with encrypted messages. Making a really strong case for me to potentially ditch Revolt. But moving my friends yet again might be impossible

Almost a year exclusively using GrapheneOS for mobile and (many years before that) GNU/Linux for all my computing.

How quickly one gets spoiled. Found myself obliged over the past few days to help relatives use Windows and iOS. It was deeply shocking.

Windows on newish hardware is so slow that I didn't think it was responding. To say nothing of the privacy and usability nightmare.

And the Apple ratchet has tightened down a few more clicks in a year. A very high quality third party app that I bought years ago now appears in a new version "with in-app purchases," and the splash screen requires me to sign in via Google or Facebook. Perfectly ghastly.

Our community is working on #LibreOffice 24.8, our next major release – due in August 2024 (as the version number suggests 😉) And the first Alpha development snapshot is now available for testing: https://qa.blog.documentfoundation.org/2024/05/21/libreoffice-24-8-alpha1-is-available-for-testing/ #foss #OpenSource

@libreoffice OK, my bad, what's the URL to the cloud version?

libreoffice,

@NiemPseu https://www.libreoffice.org/download/libreoffice-online/ – But development has been quiet for a while. Check out @CollaboraOffice Online for a more actively developed cloud suite based on LibreOffice!

As an update to the previous Toot! I have made a blogpost about which package is included in my binary-host: https://blog.gjdwebserver.nl/ords/f?p=107:HOME:::::ARTICLE:gjdwebserver-binaryhost-packages I've updated the readme of my overlay as-well with this information: https://git.gjdwebserver.nl/gjdwebserver/gjdwebserver-overlay. This would make it easier for everyone using @gentoo on a @PINE64 PinePhone Pro. So you don't have to waste heat and time compiling while still having the most optimised Linux on your PinePhone Pro. #foss #pine64 #pinephone #linux #gentoo

I'm genuinely curious.. when I make applications I always make it work according to my needs instead of thinking about making it usable for everyone else. Is this normal? Am I the only one who does this?

ro,
@ro@floss.social avatar

@phryk It's something I do feel guilty about publishing in the first place if I was just gonna tailor this to my use case only anyway. I could have just published it in a private repository or something and call it a day.

phryk,
@phryk@mastodon.social avatar

@ro Eh, if it's geared towards your personal use-case anyways, I'd say just don't package and release it as a… crate I think is the term in rust?

If you wanna be super clear about this, you can just add a README with a note about what use case it actually works in or it not being for public consumption or whatever.

That way people can find it and use your code to possibly find a solution to their specific problems but it's clear that it's not a supported package.

I'm hereby declaring the Sovereign Tech Fund and NLnet the official guardians of tech positivity. The only good tech news passing through my feed these days are reports of FOSS projects getting some nice grants.

The only thing more annoying than projects with a submit-patch-by-email workflow, are when they also require you to subscribe to their mailing list to prevent patches to be blocked on moderator approval.

I was looking for nice #foss #software for kids to play with #audio. I found the Sugar software package that looks promising: https://www.sugarlabs.org/
Anyone has tried it and can give me an opinion?

Hey people, I am looking for a solution that will analyse the photos from my smartphone, guess what's on them and allow searching by thing or place. You know, something that iPhotos does on an iPhone. Any suggestions?

🎉 Happy Birthday !

Ten years ago the german public broadcaster WDR started an tool for creating and delivering stories.

It's still one of the fastest tool out there to create interactive multimedia stories (under 1h if content is ready).

I still love the fullpanel version Pageflow CLASSIC more than the recent textscrolling NEXT.

My thought: Add some and we would have a great Insta-Story/TikTok platform clone for .

I didn't used to be a "militant" user, but I've been bitten too many times by companies with . For example, DAW, - both companies that decided to say fuck you to perpetual licenses. Now, I try to avoid any proprietary application. I recently went looking for a good notes app and everyone loves . As soon as I saw it was closed source, I noped out and settled on . These companies will eventually fuck over customers so I won't waste my time.

Can anyone in the whole world submit?
...to have a "European dimension"... but you are from elsewhere? Don't despair: there are other ways too... A significant contribution towards the vision of the Next Generation Internet initiative also qualifies. What is good for the whole open internet also benefits Europe, after all. Or put differently: we are open to talent from far and wide to deliver the ambitions of the NGI. ...

Classic Winamp is going ?

daniela,
@daniela@lethallava.land avatar

@vl1 as much as i dislike current winamp this is super neat, i know there are some winamp fan continuation but all of them are closed i think, so having the source code would be great for people who like it to keep maintaining it and to possibly bring it over natively to other platforms

hellpie,
@hellpie@raru.re avatar

@vl1 Jesus christ the press release is so fucking bad: https://about.winamp.com/press/article/winamp-open-source-code

The highlight is the excerpt from the CEO's quote:

"Our focus will be on new mobile players. Still, we don't want to forget the tens of millions of [Windows] users who will benefit from thousands of developers' experience. Winamp will remain the owner of the software."

This is literally Winamp demanding free labor from the OSS community like a fucking parasite, giving nothing in return.
