Do you live in or near , UK, and want to adopt a kitten? 4 of the kittens at my in-laws' place are still looking for a home. They're a few months older than on this picture. PM me for contact details if interested or want to know more.

A close-up of the black kitten. He looks fierce.
Another picture of the kittens. You can see the two mostly orange ones, and the one who's mostly white. They are fluffy and they have pink noses.

I'm watching in tonight, so if I start posting incoherent bollocks, you'll know my phone's battery hasn't run out...

alexanderhay,
@alexanderhay@mastodon.social avatar

...The gig started at 17,00 and ended around 22.35. That's almost six hours, which is a punishing amount of time to be standing up, especially if you want to see all the acts, and you've got a recurring leg injury, like me.

Some described it as a mini-festival, which is all very well, but at least festivals have grass to sit on.

Even with on stage, it ended up feeling like a slog. This dimmed the fun for me, slightly. Oh well.

alexanderhay,
@alexanderhay@mastodon.social avatar

In summary, all good, deafening fun, but it did feel like there were issues, which is ironic given that 's lead singer is in a .

I'm still very mobile, but I dread to think what it might be like for people on crutches, backbraces, pregnancies, & so on.

It doesn't help that gig venues seem bound by sacred law to have next to no seating. The entrance & toilets had too many doors to go through too. Again, I can manage. Plenty can't.

I really wish we had orbital transport routes in Greater Manchester, it's easy to get from one of the towns into the city centre but not from one town to the next. Sometimes it's quicker to go into the city centre and out again than go around. Worst case is going two towns across, when both orbital and radial routes are slow.

pwaring,
@pwaring@fosstodon.org avatar

@nowster @pwaring oh yes, I remember using those buses to get from Bury to Bolton quickly back in the day. There was also a Bury to Trafford Centre bus.

@AnthonyFStevens As usual with UK infrastructure they started from the wrong end. Should've started from Leeds and Manchester towards Birmingham. Then towards London. Possibly missing the city centre to cut costs but joining HS1 for onward journeys to mainland Europe or a shuttle service to London city centre.

Maker_of_Things,

.

Off to yet another today.
This is a pop up one in city centre.

I am taking minimal tools due to lousy stepped access.

alan,

@Maker_of_Things The correct response to this is to pop the hood (bonnet?), step out of the car making an apologetic hand gesture, then pretend to tinker around with the engine until beeper gets completely frustrated and drives off. Should said beeper come and decide to be helpful, then you say "I can't see what the problem was, why did you beep while I was waiting for the barrier [light, cyclist, etc.]?" This can cause them to fully lose their fecal matter. It's great entertainment.

Maker_of_Things,

@alan
I was very tempted to get out and have words but also I was hoping that the barrier would open so we could get get on with a worthwhile life.

Back in the late 90s, in the rain my car snapped the timing belt while facing up hill, in evening rush hour London traffic, in roadworks where the single lane was bounded by heavy barriers.
I had the bonnet up and was trying, unsuccessfuly, to push the car up hill and all the drivers behind just beeped.

It was a motorbiker on the other side who stopped and helped me push the car up the hill and out of the road works.

Whilst about other things today, I came across the curious attempt by the Corporation to dump all its (OK ‘nightsoil’) in . This was late 1892. Equally intrigued by the counter-arguments raised. Trent-side residents raised a stink obvs (before the real stink arrived) and were vocal in their support. They won the day. Concerns about aren’t new. The indomitable Feargal Sharkey follows solid footsteps. STOP POLLUTING OUR !

losttourist,

@rlcj Victorian-era Manchester Corporation was fairly blasé about riding roughshod over other "lesser" towns and districts.

They flooded an entire valley, drowning two villages in the Lake District, to provide water for Manchester, for example.

rlcj,
@rlcj@mstdn.social avatar

@losttourist I don’t want to be a corporation apologist, but they were facing some staggeringly difficult social and environmental challenges at the time. Manchester was growing exponentially and the infrastructure couldn’t cope. But your point stands. As they sought solutions they were quite happy for others to suffer.

Hmmm.... interestingly has decided to reduce emissions in by using a carrot not a stick.... out goes the plan for a clean air charging zone, to be replaced by major investment in to encourage people out of their (commuter) cars.

It'll be interesting to see how this plays out, as many cities have plans for new zones to cut emissions.... if Burnham's pivot gets results, might we see a ramping up of in (and subsides for) public transport?

losttourist,

@ChrisMayLA6 It's a great initiative, but to be completely successful I think it needs co-operation with and from neighbouring authorities.

For example I work in Manchester (well, Salford) but live in Warrington. It doesn't matter how good the public transport is in Greater Manchester if I'm still needing to use expensive infrequent Warrington buses and unreliable Northern Rail trains to get me to the closest TFGM options.
