I've been trying a few Linux distributions (openSUSE Tumbleweed, Fedora, Debian, Mint) and I noticed how freaking difficult it still is to install Wine and DXVK.
Come on! It's been how long? Most Windows refugees will want to install Wine. It should be as simple as:
Before bed, I want to tell a quick troubleshooting story:
I switched to Wayland!
But DCS: World has a weird frame flickering issue.
I try Proton, doesn't help.
I try different Wine version, doesn't help.
I try messing with DXVK, doesn't help.
It's an NVIDIA driver issue related to XWayland.
I admit defeat and go back to X11.
But: Wine can be run in native Wayland mode!
I find out how to run Wine without XWayland.
It works flawlessly and more performant than ever before!
Just published a new #blog post! This one's about building and running #DirectX natively on #Linux through the amazing #DXVK translation layer, and its native version which I'd never heard of. This allows building native Linux binaries without having to go through #WINE, meaning the code is debuggable with the usual tools like gdb that otherwise don't work on WINE.
Last night, I wanted to show off my little dice rolling tool I made in Unity a few years ago. But I made it before switching to Linux, so all I had was a Windows build.
Now, apparently Unity on Windows defaults to DirectX 11. "No problem!" I thought, and installed DXVK. And then the penny dropped...
My laptop is so old, that it doesn't even support Vulkan properly. :drgn_flat_x_x:
And I never noticed this, because I only ever ran DirectX 9 games through Gallium Nine.
Well, another reason to continue the conversion to Godot...
"Ohai, this is Windows. You may have noticed that I killed all the long-running jobs that you left going overnight and restarted your computer so that I could inject some AI-flavored bullshit you never asked for into your (*) operating system. You're welcome!!!”
(*) “It's not actually yours, of course. The OS now works for our Marketing Department rather than you. kthxbai.”

The guide provides every option available, too. Starting with using their Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL), to using a Virtual Machine, and even on "Bare Metal" alongside Windows.
That's right, Microsoft now tells you how to dual-boot Linux. 🤯
#Proton / #DXVK-Integration in #Steam.
@bitpirate@gamingonlinux I mean don't get me wrong, it really shines in compatibility as @fuchsiii has shown me several times: Even ancient #Windows games will run better than under Windows...
But personally I think that #Proton / #Wine / #DXVK should be transitional mechanisms and not be turned into a perpetual crutch...
It seems like a critical regression was introduced in the last #Nvidia driver version for #Linux (535.54.03).
My desktop (the whole machine, not just the OS) has been crashing for a few days now. It seems related to #Vulkan since it only reproduces when launching apps using #DXVK (on Wine and Proton).
Has someone else the same problem or knows something about that?
@lunaa@yura@torvalds because as much as we all want our favorite #FLOSS to run first, there will always be some #CCSS that can't be replaced.
That's why #Proton (#Wine + #DXVK) are seen as "necessary" (not even evil at all) mechanisms so people can even do basic #Gaming on #Linux, because #glibc prevents people from playing old #native Linux games that ain't FLOSS'd!
Rosenzweig, known for her Panfrost and Apple M1/M2 GPU driver work is now contracted by Valve to work on graphics driver development! Sounds like great news for Valve's push for Linux gaming.
@Kaldo@sdx Even though #Valve is maintaining #Proton, which is based on #Wine, I think projects like #DXVK and #GalliumNine would not exist or have come this far if it weren't for Valve.
I think Valve's contribution to the #Linux world is very indirect, but cannot be denied.
I don't really like Windows but it's for my gaming PC. My laptop does run linux. I don't know much of anything about 11 and whether it's better or not.
@lemon@webghost0101 You can even achieve that with just #Wine. I carefully set up my Wine on my two devices with #DXVK on one and #GalliumNine on the other. Took a while, to be honest.
But now, together with wine-binfmt and icoutils, I can just double-click any #Windows game. 🍷

Is Windows 11 worth installing over 10?
