#ClimateDiary Storm #Henk has turned out to be quite bad. A fatality, storm damage and flood alerts across the country. #Floods and ongoing rain in Germany too, and maybe elsewhere? We will have more and more of all this, of course.
@pvonhellermannn@NatureMC Intact #Forests can store and redistribute a lot of water - they can also buffer heavy rainfall events in summer because the rain reaches the ground with a time delay, giving the soil more time to absorb the water.
For urban areas, the #SpongeCities concept is gaining more and more attention.
When I search the internet for "aquaplanning", I only find results for "aquaplaning". 🤔😉
Here is Mongabay’s annual recap of major tropical rainforest storylines.
While the data is still preliminary, it appears that deforestation declined across the tropics as a whole in 2023 due to developments in the Amazon, which has more than half the world’s remaining primary tropical forests.
"The findings suggest #Asia’s tropical #forests could be more resilient to climate change than previously thought, provided a diversity of landscape is maintained.
They further show that humans and animals migrating across the region would have had a more diverse resource base than previously understood."
Weather report 2023 #Germany#LowerSaxony
After a mild winter with little snow, it rained regularly here until mid-May. This was followed by a warm, sunny phase without any significant rainfall. From the end of June, there was more and regular precipitation again, and overall the summer and autumn were rather humid.
Warmer phases (>=25-35 degrees Celsius) occurred in the first half of June, early July, late August and early September, otherwise it was rather moderately warm. 1/2 #ClimateDiary

The dry period from mid-May was probably unfavourable for our #forests, as the main growth period for trees here is in May/June and our sandy soil can't store water for very long. It's also questionable whether the winter precipitation was sufficient to deeply moisten the soil after the last summers of drought.
After rainfall in midsummer, some trees have sprouted new leaves. Mushrooms have appeared early and in relatively large numbers.

On Nov. 2, a joint force of the police, the Kenya Forest Service and the Kenya Wildlife Service moved to evict 700 Ogiek households from the edges of the Maasai Mau Forest.
But the African Court on Human and People’s Rights had in 2017 ordered the government to recognize the Ogiek claim to the forest, involve them in its management, and pay damages for earlier evictions.
“The Biden Administration deserves credit for changing the direction of our national forest policy, hopefully before it is too late. Instead of maximizing timber company profits, the goals are to protect the old growth forests, increase resilience to climate change, improve clean air water and wildlife habitats in forests and watersheds, and to cooperate with native, international and other stakeholders to reforest.”
#Fellowship via ORISE with the USDA Northwest Climate Hub. The fellow will engage with USDA Climate Hub, USDA and Forest Service staff to develop information on #carbon management on working lands (#forests).
Develop information to guide management planning practices for the National Forest System related to carbon and #greenhouse_gases. Conduct research related to carbon dynamics in forest systems.

Orchids Mosses & Ferns—or epiphytes are crucial for Earth’s #biodiversity and play essential roles in #forests around the world. Yet, even those are now under increasing threat via human caused disturbances.
