Also jedem einzelnen Schüler.

@bookstodon It's Memorial Day weekend here in the U.S. which is a great time to do some meaningful reflection. To that end, I picked up HEAVYWEIGHT, by Solomon J. Brager. The title is aptly chosen, in so many ways.

It's a graphic memoir about family, identity (including trans/nonbinary), intergenerational trauma, greed, war, bigotry, eugenics, class inequality, privilege, colonial genocide, the plight of political and religious refugees, and the process of confronting personal ghosts. It involved a massive research undertaking that formed the basis of the author's dissertation. I learned so much, even though I thought I knew a lot about the historical time period. Def recommend.

Well, this turned out to be one of the most devastating books I’ve ever read. ‘Song of Stars’ by Guus Luijters, trans. Marian de Vooght, is a beautifully written attempt to recuperate the memory of a Jewish girl from the Netherlands, murdered by the Nazis.

Certainly the most infuriating and tragic aspect of King’s wilful denial of well-documented #Nazi evil is his attitude towards #Jews, which led to #Canada’s refusal to accept significant numbers of refugees from the mounting #Holocaust hell.

One of the central horrors of the Holocaust, much commented-on over the years, notably by Hannah Arendt: How "ordinary" people were willing to commit murder with seeming casualness, while going about their ordinary lives, playing music, going to church, picknicking in forests and meadows, laughing and eating blueberries.

On this point, Anderson Cooper interviews playwrignt Moises Kaufman re: his new play "Here There Are Blueberries."

One clear sign of how ignorant and immature the college protesters are is how they all don't seem to want to be held accountable for the crimes they committed.

I wish that our U.S. campuses would at least still assign students to read MLK's Letter from a Birmingham jail, and Thoreau's essay on Civil Disobedience.

I think these protesters have failed the guidelines of: collection of the facts to determine whether injustices exist; negotiation; self-purification; and effective direct action.
