Where are the universities in the Fediverse?

Why don't universities have their own Mastodon instances yet?

Why don't students get a Mastodon handle when they enrol?

Why don't universities host lecture videos on PeerTube in the Fediverse?

There is a lot to be said for universities getting more involved in the Fediverse.

A call that can only be supported! #boost

"Dear members of the University community,

"The University administration respects all student protests, just not this one. Students have fought for many important causes over the years, and their right to protest is sacrosanct. In this case, however, we must arrest and slander them.

“We will not look back and regret this decision. Although we were wrong about not admitting women, abolitioning racial quotas, US involvement in Vietnam, and divesting from apartheid South Africa, we are confident that this time is different."

As students' costs to attend continue to spiral, one might conclude that this was all part of a plan to make unaffordable for the children from poorer families...

Not so much 'widening participation' as 'narrowing participation'.

Its almost like the Govt. was suspicious of an educated electorate?

Some of you are aware of the ongoing TA at , and it pains me to see the administration is succeeding in actively dividing undergraduates, graduate , and alike, by pushing all three to the absolute mental limit. We - and by that I mean all three above - must NOT let the administration tear the social fabric in our to put money before people. When the says "united we bargain, divided we beg," it means not just them, but everyone. 1/

The engineering faculty I work in used to have “Change the World” as a slogan. I never liked it and I’ve just worked out why. It’s because The World is fine. What we need to be doing is changing ourselves so that we fit in with our fully functioning life support system - Earth - learning how to work with the great planetary cycles that keep us alive rather than against them.

Maybe the new engineering slogan should be “Working out how to do better”.

Troubling story in Times Higher Education by Philip Moriarty, Prof of Physics at University of Nottingham.
https://www.timeshighereducation.com/blog/im-being-docked-pay-boycotting-marking-i-teach-free#comment-68607. It's behind a paywall, so I'll summarise. His salary is 100% from EPSRC research fellowship, but he does some teaching (which he's v good at) bcs he likes it, is good at it, and is public-spirited. Now Uni is docking his pay bcs he participated in a marking boycott as part of industrial action.

The decline in student funding is a good way to measure the collapse of a nation. My father got a grant to go to . I got a loan that I was able to pay back in a few years (mostly by living at home for a spell during and after my studies). Evidently this isn't an option for most, meanwhile successive governments have acted to impoverish the student body.

Not sure I can bring myself to watch this, with major redundancies at my university and others, and whole departments being closed down, because there are not enough students. The whole sector is breaking apart. I hope the series will consider this too.

Curious about movements, I poked around student newspaper archives today. While some discussion of South Africa took place at the U. of earlier, 1983 looks like the moment when it took off. However, this relatively well-known case wasn't the first to garner attention at UofT and other Canadian universities (notably U. of Winnipeg). That honour seems to go to Noranda, a mining company heavily involved in Pinochet's Chile. 1/
