The reason why Altman and OpenAI are moving so fast is that they know - they know - their product is mostly useless.
So, what they're doing is making sure we have no alternative when the media bubble pops.
They're killing off everything else, that's it.
Ultimately, the goal is to have #ChatGPT answer all your questions. And you'll have no way of confirming the answer is correct, because all other search engines will use an LLM to spray you with bullshit as well.
And they'll have source/reference links, which will be pages written by an LLM, possibly on a different subject.
The tech isn't the problem. Sam Altman and the other CEOs are. It's them who decided to sell you a glorified autocomplete as an AI.

I was granted early access from on high to the MacOS #ChatGPT app. It's pretty slick, albeit barebones, and comes with a nice default keyboard shortcut to bring up a launcher / prompt box.
Haven't had much reason to play with GPT 4o yet. Curiously the Mac app defaults to GPT 4. I thought I read that 4o is faster AND cheaper, but I suppose it's still being rolled out. The option's there if I want to manually switch to it.
Just FYI, if you have older parents or other family members, set up some sort of shibboleth with them so they know what to ask you if you ever call them asking for something. These new generative models are going to be extremely convincing, and the idiots in charge of these companies think they can use guardrails to stop it being used inappropriately. Just heard a new track from Eddie Vedder so I was curious about his band Pearl Jam, touring and the conflict with TicketMaster. I asked ChatGPT which was helpful, but what was interesting is there are now links to sources which I often do not get in these responses. Linking to the source material is one key different just using Google. Perhaps this is a change which will help drive traffic to websites and address some of the concerns with OpenAI and ChatGPT.

This is one of the biggest reasons that I am so anti-AI, at least in its current incarnation. All of its promises to make work/life a little easier for people come at the expense of literally burning the world, and we were already doing far too much of that before these tools were released.
