American Mask Bans: Why Canadian Abolitionists and Disability Justice Advocates Should Be Paying Attention.

radicalcarecollective,
@radicalcarecollective@niagara.social avatar

Covid-19 is still as present as it has ever been, and people have every right to continue to protect themselves from it, as well as practise community care, without having to worry about police intervention.
Banning masks also sets a precedent for the next pandemic, which might be sooner than you’d think. As climate change wreaks havoc on ecosystems, animal to human viral transmission becomes more common.

radicalcarecollective,
@radicalcarecollective@niagara.social avatar

We need to be working together to solidify our abolitionist and disability justice politics and fight attempts to push eugenics and squash dissent.
This means returning to masking as a regular, everyday practice, as centring the most vulnerable continues to be our best path forward to liberation.

This has been a challenging start to the year. I have finally fully left the little remote/home based work I did because of my Long-Covid and ill health after wrongly 'pushing through' in a state of constant PEM - just varying in intensity - relying on adrenaline surges, my partner caring for me, being pretty much housebound and making myself worse and worse. I regret not stopping sooner. I regret how much extra damage I have done. Though, I understand there was a interplay of structural and agency shaping my choices. I also know I am lucky to have had the choice to 'push through' and how many would not have been able to choose that even if they had wanted to. I have now got a lot of social security applications and appointments which, coming as no surprise, is fucking tough and challenging. The questions you have to answer, the awareness of all the ways the state tries to screw you. I am lucky to have a super supportive partner helping me with this, someone from a local charity helping and can't talk highly enough about the Benefits and Work guides!!!

Solidarity with everyone who still wears a mask. Solidarity with everyone who has had friends and family turn their backs on them for being covid cautious. Solidarity with everyone who has Long-Covid and does all they can to make sure no-one else has to live through the daily difficulties we do. Solidarity to everyone fighting against ableism, eugenics, Social Darwinism and health supremacy. Solidarity to everyone who gets shouted at and abused for wearing a mask. Solidarity to everyone who keeps going despite the overwhelming hegemonic narrative that what we are living through is 'normal'. Solidarity to everyone sharing science and facts about how covid spreads and the dangers of covid. Solidarity with you.

@violetblue 's Covid Sanity Handbook is "a direct challenge to the social and political gaslighting conspiring to make us feel crazy, isolated, hysterical, misinformed, overreacting, excluded, broken, somehow unwilling, or paints us as threatening simply because we do not want a Covid-19 infection."

One of the Covid Sanity Handbook's exemplary stretch goals is a DRM-free audiobook, and it's very close. Help it get there:

I need some mastodon magic, please.
I'm looking for countries that have introduced or broadened Indoor Air Quality laws since 2020. I'm particularly interested in the implementation/enforcement of those laws, especially in schools, healthcare, public transport...
I'm aware of laws in France, Belgium and Ontario but haven't found much on how it's going.

Please boost for reach!

Hey covid-cautious friends, I'm looking for recommendations for a HEPA air purifier.

I did all the research needed to purchase large ones for my home, but now I'm looking to buy a smaller medium-sized one for my oldest to take to college for use in a dorm room.

Must be HEPA and ideally relatively quiet and not take up too much space.

There's an overwhelming number of brands out there now, some claiming "HEPA-grade" but not really. Would love some starting points. Thanks!

Here's the thing. I'm perfectly willing to spend time w/ people outdoors, or masked indoors, or unmasked indoors w/ rapid testing, open windows, air purifiers.

But if the other person isn't covid-aware, then I don't actually ENJOY hearing about or seeing photos of their various unmasked exploits that include people I know who are medically vulnerable (and who don't even take covid precautions themselves).

It's depressing instead of uplifting & makes me prefer being a hermit.

You may not have the spoons to attend an event.

You may not realise there's something you can do right now to help your community be more accessible to others.

You may want to spread word of a cool event to your followers. Which is awesome.

I'm always going to check out what you're interested in, mutuals.

Although I'd like a small favour if you can. Please can you check if they have a public health policy?

If they don't could you ask them? Please?

Because I want to boost.

Hm. Ne. Mysteriös. Unerklärlich.

"The biology hasn't changed," Baker said, but there was more pressure for people to go back to work and school."

The mask I wear, , is having a storewide sale through the end of the month: https://www.flomask.com/

It's to celebrate the founder's birthday, so the coupon code is “KEVSTURNING45”.

I'm happy with my Flo Mask—it's the most comfortable well-fitting mask for me as a glasses-wearer. Good protection with minimal fog. (I recommend getting the optional foam condensation insert, which also helps reduce fogging.)

In most regions of the world, it was among the top 5 causes of death. In the Americas, it was the number 1 cause of death.
