I have always been suspicious that the "EVs are too expensive" notion is a plant by Fossil Fuel companies and some car manufacturers to shift the blame to consumers for not transitioning to EVs.
10: Hyundai Elantra: $21,999 v Audi Q4 e-tron: $63,400
9: Hyundai Kona: $25,999 v Mustang Mach-E: $57,690
8: Honda Civic: $28,765 v Kia Niro EV: $48,544
7: Honda CR-V: $37,261 v Toyota bZ4x: $48,042
6: Toyota Corolla: $26,372 v Hyundai Ioniq 5: $54,999
5: GMC Sierra: $48,931 v Hyundai Kona Electric: $46,399
4: Chevy Silverado: $47,931 v Volkswagen ID.4: $51,220
3: Toyota RAV4: $36,202 v Chevy Bolt: $41,575
2: Dodge Ram: $37,952 v Tesla Model 3: $53,990
1: Ford F-150: $46,600 v Tesla Model Y: $54,990
Averages: Gas: $35,801.20 EV: $52,084.90
So ya, the difference overall is about $20,000 on average.
However, these are all base prices and while EVs generally have only a few higher priced options, the Gas cars/trucks often start low and have many higher priced options, some over $75K. So I believe the real-world selling price averages would be closer.
I believe it will take governments being aggressive and consistent on their Electric-only targets to force companies to re-tool their productions to both meet demand and bring the prices down.
Both Canada and the USA have recently gone in the opposite direction, both pushing back their EV-only targets. This is both why prices remain high, and we won't hit our CO2 reductions.
And ya, as a proud Hyundai Kona Electric owner, I'm going to finish with this “call-out" from the CEO of Hyundai to other manufacturers.
"Why would anybody want to purchase an EV from an [automaker like Toyota or GM] who’s lobbying against EVs?”
Now it's always a good time to decarbonize and the sooner the better, but unless you totally can't swing it now would be a good time to do it in order to get a quicker return on investment.
Speaking of investing in decarbonization, did you know that a 2024 Nissan Leaf EV only costs $500 more than a 2024 Toyota Prius gas burner? That's what they say in this story.
The value of efforts to #decarbonize is undercut by our continued failure to implement a real #CarbonTax. It's difficult to make a business selling electric cargo bikes if gas is cheap and car #parking is free. Meanwhile we have a housing crisis, because people like to sit in traffic while the radio tells them that the size of their car loan is a status symbol.
Department of Energy announces largest-ever investment to decarbonize industry
"The Energy Department on Monday announced up to $6 billion for 33 projects across more than 20 states to #decarbonize energy-intensive industries and reduce industrial greenhouse gas emissions.
When factoring in the companies’ share in the projects, the initiative's total investment would amount to $20 billion."
The need to keep the #gas flowing and the #colonial dream alive outweigh the immediate need to #decarbonize and #decolonize our planet and work together to survive the mess we've made.
The U.S. is betting big on clean hydrogen to cut emissions from heavy industry. The government has designated seven “Hydrogen Hubs” nationwide to share $7 billion in funds for green hydrogen projects. The hubs could create thousands of jobs, boost U.S. energy security and help the world reach net zero.
One of the conundrums of research can be that detrimental things are sometimes done to research detrimental things.
They used GenAI in order to calculate the #GlobalWarming that GenAI will cause by 2030 to be up to 1.5% more demand on our electricity grid. Every bit of demand growth warms our planet until we've gotten all the fossil fuels off our grid!
Anyways, everyone needs to #Decarbonize as quickly as they possibly can please. 🙏
For almost an hour this morning in the midwest of the U.S. almost 2/3rds of our electricity was being produced from #wind power (which is actually a form of #solar power I'd like to point out but that's besides the point).
This is real, tangible #ClimateProgress and more concrete results of our efforts over the last decades that should give you #ClimateHope
Despite all of the #Doomism that the grifters are selling, we're actually making #ClimateProgress and there's still time for us all to #Decarbonize and start to reverse this #GlobalWarming we've caused.
The world's first modular green ammonia plant is starting up in Kenya, allowing the production of fertilizer on farms rather than having it transported thousands of miles.
Good summary, alarming🚨, but there's hope if mitigating CC is prioritized: Unless sharp reductions in man-made GHG occur soon, the LT average is likely to pass 1.5 °C during the 2030s. By a small margin, BE’s est. of the 1850-1900 reference period is colder than most other groups. As a result, our estimate of the change since the preindustrial period is modestly larger. If 2023 exceeds 1.5 °C this year, it's likely to do so only by a small amount.
@KimPerales
Exceeding one point five during the first year of an El Nino is no reason to lose hope, but it is cause to hasten your plan to #Decarbonize to the best of your ability and to vote for climate hawks.
Dear Friends,
My #TransitTuesday and #ClimateDiary entry today. For train enthusiasts this is a M3 train built about 40 years ago. This photo was made about 5 years ago but many are still in service. They are good for #photography because they don't have the high-back plastic bucket seats that limit sight lines of later carriages. Also, much more space for overhead storage than later and current models. #TakeTheTrain to #decarbonize. #PhotoResearcher#trains#transit#masstransit
@ExtinctionR when you consider this fact, alongside the fact that the world's biggest investment banks are still investing in fossil fuels, you realise that capitalists are actually completely incompetent, they just have control of decision making.
The nuclear industry is so focused on Germany's decision to close their radioactivity factories after Fukushima and Chernobyl it seems to me that in general they're may not be supporters of democracy?
Anyways, Germany's solar installations are up 88% in the first 8 months of 2023, compared to same period of 2022. It installed 8.99 GW in 2023 through August, up from 4.8 GW in 2022. Germany's solar totals 76 GW, with a 2030 goal of 215 GW.
There is simply not that much demand for BEVs. It is mostly a fad driven by subsidies and virtue signaling. It's a matter of when, not if something will give. VW and other car companies will have to cut production and move away from BEVs. Likely towards #hydrogen cars.
More good #ClimateProgress news as EV sales are sizzling in Germany. EVs were 37% of sales in August, up 78% compared to August 2022.
Fully electric vehicles were 32% of sales! Germany is 5th largest auto market in world. China is the biggest auto market, twice USA's, which is the 2nd.
Speaking of the globe's 2nd largest auto market, US cumulative EV investment skyrocketed 5X or 400% since January 2022, rising from $32.6 billion to 165 billion! Since passage of Biden's Inflation Reduction Act through August 10, 2023, $92.3 billion of EV investment flowed.
With the cost of EV batteries falling about 50% every 5 years since 2008 it's now within reach of most Americans to #decarbonize
I know that this week activists are attacking Biden, but his policies are helping a lot!
Interested in learning more about what assistance you can get from Biden's Inflation Reduction Act climate legislation to help you decarbonize so that you're no longer warming our globe? Webinar on September 7th.
To #decarbonize the #housing sector, we need to go from 66 million fossil fuel #heatingsystems to zero over the next three decades.
In order to achieve this goal, we need to phase out 2.4 million #fossilfuel#furnaces every single year for the next 27 years. This is where the math gets a little scary.
Climate change is an immediate threat to the majority of the world's population.
We need a local, regional, state, national, and international "moon shot" type of concentration of effort using available resources while developing and advancing new science and technologies to counteract the damage humans have caused.
Without this type of all-out, universal cooperation, human civilization, and perhaps humanity itself, are in imminent danger of extinction.
"...that transition to a low #carbon future is not going to happen overnight. We need realistic options and #technologies that allow us to #decarbonize our existing #applications."
Too many insist that only "perfect" #ClimateChange mitigation solutions are worth pursuing.
I believe that doing Everything, Everywhere, All at Once is the best, imperfect, strategy for saving us from our ongoing #climate disaster.
By ever-improving "good" options, we can save ourselves.
