While #Adobe is doing an absolute stupid with their new licensing terms, and (now Canva-owned) #Affinity slashes prices by half in a "flash sale", I am once again asking people to consider supporting #FLOSS tools instead.
Yes, they are far from perfect.
But with a small fraction of what these closed source vendors are raking in, these tools could be made immeasurably better.
And they won't end up bought up and enshittified, as experience with past attempts at doing that to FLOSS tools shows.
Many #FLOSS projects including (but not limited to) Linux distros do not offer #torrent files anymore. The only explanation I can think of is wanting to track the number of downloads, but that is a bad measure because people can share the installer as well.
Having torrent file not only help you to reduce the load from your server (meaning you pay less money), but also provide a good opportunity for volunteers to help your project by seeding.

Have a look at the @publicspaces conference. I'm biased, but if you're interested in technology & it's impact on our society or work with civic oriented organisations & technology you need to check it out. Have a look at the schedule & the available live streams:
Wondering if anyone's interested in #FLOSS for older systems like #DOS and #FreeDOS? I really liked the #XFDOS distribution based on #FLTK and #nano-x with FreeDOS. I know the lead developer of XFDOS is no longer active, but it would be nice to see some development continue on this project. Is anyone else besides me interested in this sort of thing?
While F-Droid appears to be "just" an alternative #OpenSource#AppStore for #Android, it is actually the apex of a lifestyle movement that's choosing to use Android only with #FreeSoftware and without #Google or advertising-related #surveillance. Realising that makes many of its features - and shortcomings - easier to understand. I was the main interviewer in the discussion this week on #FLOSS Weekly with core @fdroidorg developer @eighthave and it was a good show.
Posting an informal video of initial progress on an app for the Carbon Farm Network, a textile supply chain network in the NY Hudson Valley. Uses Holochain, hREA, Valueflows.
So far, we have offers, requests, planning from recipe for the season, starting into recording economic events against the plan and coordinating through the season. Much much more to do!
For all people here that use #Squeezebox and Lyrion Music Server. There is a community firmware update for Squeezebox Radio, Touch and Controller. I wrote a blogpost why and how to update to the latest version: 8.5.0.
#OpenSource#FLOSS#Crypto#Cryptocurrencies#Bitcoin: "The P2P Rights Fund aims to support various legal efforts, including subsidizing defense counsel, sponsoring amicus briefs in pivotal cases, and financing affirmative impact litigation to set favorable legal precedents. Additionally, the fund plans to offer free or subsidized regulatory advice to developers working on non-custodial Bitcoin tools.
The initiative is in direct response to recent legal actions that have raised concerns within the Bitcoin community. Developers of non-custodial tools, such as hardware wallet creators and transaction node operators, are increasingly being treated as financial institutions, which is seen as a fundamental misunderstanding of the technology by the government."
Time, use and practice are key to switching OSes, platforms and apps: you get comfortable with what you use. A good start to moving away from Microsoft Windows might be to install Libre Office on Windows, and start learning to use that for your daily word processing, presentations and spreadsheets. Take some steps with open source software before you even have to tackle a new operating system. #floss#foss#freesoftware#recall#quitwindows#quitmicrosoft
