If it seems like I'm currently talking a lot about "the Media Activist Manifesto," it's because I worked on it all year, and researched the subject for twenty years. I've arrived at the conclusion that, in the spirit of , or Mutu Network, the can hold a key to societal change through radical news, based on a framework similar to , , and in particular . Imagine an online space to visit for anticapitalist and antifascist information and info relevant to whichever locality you're in. How much do you use Kbin for microblogging?

One of the things I find cool about Kbin is the fact that it's a platform for both thread aggregation and microblogging. How much do you use the latter side of things? Do you make microblog posts, actively browse the microblog tab, view them in your home feed, or rarely touch them?

it's been a while since i took ownership of @foreign_affairs > in the past, this magazine used to be a place for international news and politics - until it fell dormant when the former owner was no more active on kbin

i believe that kbin.social already offers well-established magazines which perfectly serve that purpose, e.g. @worldwithoutus, @worldnews, or @anime_titties

hence, the foreign affairs magazine will concentrate on larger debates, with opinion pieces explicitly welcome!

the first linked article in the re-purposed magazine is an opinion piece by former tuvaluan pm enele sopoaga on falepili, an obscene treaty which enables australia to cash in on the misery of tuvalu, an island endangered by climate change

For those that think since your profile is public, anyone is entitled to your data for whatever purposes they see fit.

Let me ask you, do you keep your vehicle outside? If so, I'll be over shortly for a joyride. Where am I going and will you get the car back? Who knows, it's in public, free to use.

So, apparently when using an ActivityPub enabled service, you agree to have your data harvested for the sake of corporate profits.

This has been said ad nauseam the past couple days and I would like to get proof.

Can anyone actually find the text where this exists? Whether it be connected to activitypub documents or mastodon. I just wanna see it so it's not debated anymore.

I didn't really think this was the case, but I've been wrong PLENTY of times before.

idkbin 1.3.4 is out! This time around, I added a small icon next to the expand/collapse button on microblog posts. Like with most things in idkbin, it can be toggled.

View the changelog here.

Why people feel the need to reply to posts that they don't want to see, is baffling.

You have many tools at your disposal to avoid seeing content you don't wish to see.

Filters, blocking, or muting are just a few.

You don't need to reply to them insulting them for their post. You just look like an asshole.

A case for preemptively defederating with Threads

With Meta beginning to test federation, there's a lot of discussion as to whether we should preemptively defederate with Threads. I made a post about the question, and it seems that opinions differ a lot among people on Kbin. There were a lot of arguments for and against regarding ads, privacy, and content quality, but I don't...

I have threads silenced on Infosec.exchange, .town, and fedia.social. That means people here won’t see stuff from threads, but you have the option to follow and interact or outright block the threads instance.

There are some, though, that are hyper opposed and not finding that to be sufficient. Hypothetically speaking, if I were to create another instance that did hard block threads (activitypub, DNS, firewall, etc), would what would be the type of instance would you like to see?

Threads is oficially starting to test ActivityPub integration (www.threads.net)

Mark Zuckerberg: Starting a test where posts from Threads accounts will be available on Mastodon and other services that use the ActivityPub protocol. Making Threads interoperable will give people more choice over how they interact and it will help content reach more people. I'm pretty optimistic about this.

It's kind of funny how many 1:1 clones of popular subreddits were created on kbin after the big Reddit api debacle earlier this year that were posted in by like one or two people for a month or so, then just completely died. Some with hundreds or 1k + users subscribed.

Just seeing all of them in the abandoned magazine section.

ThatOneKirbyMain2568,

@btp Yeah, it sucks to see how much activity has dropped since the Reddit migration. Monthly active users have dropped from 45,000 to 5000. If you think that a lot of the 45,000 were alts, it's still a huge drop compared to Lemmy (65,000 to 35,000). I think Ernest's long absence was a big factor in the decline.

But even among the few who are here, there's little posting outside of the big news and meme magazines (though that also goes for Lemmy communities). Not unique to the by any means — there will always be way more lurkers than posters — but I really wish more people would contribute to the communities that they're active in.

I think that the same sentence can suit the different platforms of the Fediverse

RTR#40 Further planning of the ActivityPub module, something is happening regarding mobile apps

Today marks the 40th day of the devlog, and the new federation module is expanding on the whiteboard. Fortunately, @jwr1 reminded me that I had previously launched it on another...

🆕 blog! “Why did Usenet fail?”

This is annecdata - not a serious academic study. Adjust your expectations accordingly. When I first got online, the World Wide Web was still in its infancy - so CompuServe was my gateway to the Internet. I loved their well organised chat room. A couple of clicks and I could be discussing Babylon 5 with […]

That's my question. How would one exploit this learning, if starting up a fediverse server now, with minimal resources?

I feel like including ads to raise resources for moderation might be one thing... Huge drawbacks of course.

Any other ideas?
