As if children's books aren't already losing visibility due to censorship now this...
This year Goodreads has removed all children's books categories from their Goodreads Choice Awards, meaning no more #MG or #PB categories. Worse, Graphic Novel & Poetry, have also been eliminated.
Here you can vote to ask them to bring those categories back:
One way that I get such cute illustrations for my children's books is I use #AIArt to refine my vision and then send those to the illustrator so she has a guide. #KidLit#KidLitArt#ChildrensBooks#TheresARobot DrCarlottaABerry.com/childrensbooks
Tonight I'm turning off the phone and reading The Wild Robot by Peter Brown because I'm more interested in it than my daughter. It's OK to read kids #books as an adult right?
Need a timeline cleanse? Here's an article about the daughter (and inspiration for "Sal" in Blueberries for Sal) reading her father Robert McCloskey's work to an adoring intergenerational audience in a small public library in Maine. A super "Science Behind the Fiction" event at #PortobelloBookFestival with #DougJohnstone (THE SPACE BETWEEN US) and myself talking about FRIEND ME.
We chatted about writing sci-fi proudly, how other writing like journalism affects our fiction, and the joys & terrors of Enceladus and AI. Thrilled to hear the sequel to Doug's book is out next march. Sci-fi forever!
The Lost Library is a little middle grade book treasure. It is a pure declaration of love to librarians and little free library stewards and how they unite the Community and help make it better. I deeply enjoy this sweet mystery adventure with a paranormal twist. It is simply lovely ! If you love books, cats, cheese, tea and are always on the hunt for a little free library, this book will be a hit !
The brilliant author Elle McNicoll has set up The Adrien Prize to champion the writing of authors who include positive depictions of #Disability and #ChronicIllness in their children's books following the closure of The Blue Peter Children’s Book Award earlier this year. The shortlist has just been announced, as follows:
The Secret of Haven Point by Lisette Auton, Puffin Books
Wilder Than Midnight by Cerrie Burnell, Puffin Books
A Flash of Fireflies by Aisha Bushby, Farshore Books
This is a brand-new prize to get behind and it’s great to see that The Book Trust have recently given away copies of the longlist to schools in a competition.
This article has a little more information about the prize > https://www.lovereading4kids.co.uk/blog/elle-mcnicoll-launches-new-childrens-book-prize-the-adrien-prize-6408
“Living with uncertainty is like having a rock in your shoe. If you can’t remove the rock, you have to figure out how to walk despite it. There is simply no other choice.”
My colleague is trying to identify a fantasy novel he read as a child/tween sometime around 1980-1984 in the U.S., and so far all of us who are trying to assist are stumped. If you can help, we'd be most grateful! (UPDATE: We’ve ruled out works by Patricia McKillip.)
Here's what he remembers:
He thinks it was published in the late 1970s. (He read a library hardback without a dustjacket, so he didn't see the cover art.)
He thinks it was a standalone novel, not a book in a series.
The plot involved a boy and girl brought up as siblings, but in fact they were the respective heirs of two warring kingdoms, heraldically represented as "the Mountain" and "the Sea." It culminated in a duel between two wizards.
Currently making an invitation for one of the neighbor children’s family for the celebrity story hour for my book’s Kickstarter. There’s a teeny rsvp letter/form inside.
I am reading the cutest middle grade novel right now. It's called The Lost Library by Rebecca Stead and Wendy Mass and it's about a boy, a little free library, a couple ghosts, and Mortimer, the library cat. Highly recommend for readers age 8-12.
My and Teemu Juhani's The Little Shop of Nightmares series has been sold to Ukraine, which makes the total count of territories now 28! Wowee! :ablobcatgooglymlemjumping:
Painajaispuodit on myyty nyt myös Ukrainaan, eli kielialueita on agentuurin laskun mukaan nyt niinkin hieno määrä kuin 28! Huikea juttu. :ablobcatenjoy:
I'm trying to create some resources for school-age #children at my #library to explore websites other than Roblox. Anyone have any suggestions about sites that have engaging activities for 7-13 year olds that don't feel didactic or moralizing, and are actually fun or interesting?
