EllieK,

@WeeklyAmericanPandemicDeaths

Where does this figure of 3397 deaths come from? According to the link you provide above, the figure is 936 deaths. (WHO on your linked source)
Or have I read something wrong?

I masked today in doctor's office, like I always do indoors in general. But today it prompted two very loud individuals to converse how they dont need to mask unless they are feeling awful. (Other whom had cough, fever, and couldn't go to work because of those and was told to go to doctor's for a note and test!!)

Of course they just know if they are sick, it's not like you can get mild symptoms or be asymptomatic AND SPREAD Covid to those who could die!

@CroakeyNews I'll repeat a post I did the other day.
How can public (PH) battle ? One of the problems (among many) they had during the pandemic is variation in messages and communication from different agencies, and changes in messages over time. Maybe PH agencies should work together, pool their resources and hire experts in communication -- a large PR firm such as Hill & Knowlton. They create communications programs that can target different audiences, different regions, they do things like create focus groups to determine the best messaging approaches to get concepts across, and use marketing psychology techniques that I'm pretty sure public health agencies and other scientific groups don't use.
Hiring an agency is expensive, but may have helped reduced some of the issues around , and sources of disease.

Watching Columbo. (S2:E6 A Stitch in Crime. Special guest Leonard Nimoy)

This is from 1972. The nurse is wearing the stereotypical nurse outfit. White a-line skirt, funny little hat. 🙄

But CHECK OUT THE !!

In 1972.

Even on a TV show.

"New study in Network Open: Testing the limits of fit through extensive re-donning and re-use in medical settings.

Deep dive: 🔥🔥🔥

Healthcare workers were given fit-tested N95 respirators (). Here's what happened.
🔹Same N95 worn for 5 shifts
🔹Shifts typically 10 hrs
🔹Taken off and put back on (doffed/donned) typically 4 times per shift
🔹25% of workers re-donned 7+ times per shift!
🔹Stored in an air-tight bin between shifts (they should have been allowed air flow to dry out..)
🔹39% of users failed to pass a qualitative fit test after shift 1
🔹About 90% failed a fit test after re-use for 5 shifts (typically 20+ re-dons)
🔹Cup-style N95s outperformed others on re-use
🔹Repeat doffing/donning (taking off/putting on) per shift was associated with increased risk of fit failure
🔹Qualitative fit testing overestimates the chances of "bad fit" by 71%

How do I interpret the findings."

Anyone know of a good elastomeric respirator that works both for lowish nose bridges AND large glasses (and small but fat faces)? For example, Flomask does not work with my glasses despite technically fitting my nose.

I've tried like five now and can't afford to keep just trying and trying. I've been using disposable N-95s when I've had to go out, but they're not totally perfect either.

I just found out that these blue surgical face make better face warmers outside in the minus-something weather (with a slight wind) than a scarf.
You don't get as much of that unpleasant moisture building up like you do with a scarf over your face.

Had another wonderful session last night. I've been setting up a murder mystery for the players to solve. It took months to get all the pieces into place.

They ran down the clues and are sure they've figured out who the murderer is. Next session will likely be confronting the suspect. Just need to decide in the moment if it needs a climactic battle, a heartfelt confession. or some combination of the two.

I had developed the plot, worked on making the suspect cast likeable and develop them as characters, drop clues, and make the whole thing feel logical.

I really like these games. They really push the mechanics out of the way and let me focus on telling the best narrative I can. This game has really helped me push my storycraft.

I'll be taking a brief sabbatical as a player, as one of the other players is kind enough to give me a little break. I've been running this for at least a year now and I have a second big campaign that's all me.

Thanks to @violetblue 's awesome newsletter, I discovered . This is like the Rolls Royce of .

  • They have sizes based on different face shapes.
  • They've actually tested the masks and report performance numbers.
  • You can get replacement parts
  • You can zhuzh it up with different straps and decorations
  • It's expensive ($90 for the mask, $60 for 50 filters). But this is like buy it once and use it for the rest of your life.

Here begins a thread about finding, choosing, and comfortably wearing masks. With a few extra tidbits at the end. Let's begin!
Masks: Some good ones to buy
Best masks are high filtration efficiency, a good fit for most faces, and available from a reputable seller. These are a few:

Evergreen CleanTop from https://kollecteusa.com/collections/face-mask and Bluna Facefit also from there https://kollecteusa.com/products/blunak-kf94-black?_pos=2&_sid=5a1845832&_ss=r

Powecom and Harley from https://bonafidemasks.com/?__cf_chl_tk=wgsm2xiXglqOTZy2lAKAdmahUvZ68UnDw0lgkH5C544-1704988871-0-gaNycGzNC3s

woven,

Making bad masks better:
Like the surgical mask on lines 35 and 36 of the database, there are three things you can do to make a bad mask less bad.

  1. Nose clip pinch https://www.canvasetc.com/product/aluminum-nose-bridge-strip-adhesive-backed-clips-for-masks/

  2. Fix the Mask https://www.fixthemask.com/collections/all

  3. thread some cord locks onto non-adjustable mask ear loops (a bobby pin works well for this) to be able to adjust the mask to properly fit your face https://www.amazon.com/Adjuster-Silicone-Adjustable-Stoppers-Tightener/dp/B08CZTFJH2 https://www.efavormart.com/products/50-pcs-silicon-mask-buckle-for-adjusting-mask-rope-ear-loop-adjuster

"...there were 1.6 million new infections per day with a steep slope of rise, to get to the estimate of ~2 million infections each day at peak of the JN.1 wave."

Bottom line: new infections WAY up, hospitalizations less so.

Risk of increases with every repeat infection. Up to 4% of Americans are already suffering from it. Latest gives protection from severe illness, death, AND LongCOVID!! if you can!

Also, are we actually going to educate people on masks, or just say "wear a mask!" and hand out surgical masks again? Oh... is on it! 🙄

I remember when I thought was a good hospital. Lol
“You don’t have to wear a mask but if you do you have to screw up the seal by wearing one of our masks over it. Hopefully they aren’t sitting in an open box at check in where people breathe on them all day.”
But hey, at least the “medical professional” will wear one in the room with you finally. Wtf?!

A fascinating report on Long Covid.

The last question the researchers were asked is if they are still wearing masks.

All of them said yes. They said they don't want long covid and will do whatever it takes to reduce the risk.

So if you are still wearing a mask you are in the company of some of the smartest researchers out there.
