So while one key piece of the is that entire instances can be blocked as a form of moderation, and keeping things safe for people. I think it should be clearly stated to newcomers to any instance if entire platforms such as / / / .com / (through a bridge) are being blocked.

If someone wants to have a federated identity and follow family/friends on Meta then they are SOL if an instance completely blocks the entire platform.

@tim When you sign up for , or you agree to give them a license to content you post. It is a very broad perpetual license giving them lots of rights to your content, including the right to sublicense. When you sign up for Mastodon, most instances do not take a license, the content rights you give them are defined in the privacy policy, and they do not include reposting your content to corporate sites that assume licenses to the content.

hmm, wonder how hard it would be to build a of instances known to federate with and friends

(or , , , bridges, bridges, etc.)

answer: not very hard as long as admins keep leaving their federated timelines open

you'd want to base this on regular periodic timeline sampling so that instances that defederate will automatically drop off the blocklist after a week or whatever

There's an interesting line in this NYTimes piece on the / issue:

> “It is hard to imagine how [Facebook/Meta] can comply with this order”

I suspect that that will be one of Facebook's main grounds of appeal, that its impossibility renders it disproportionate.

@Jigsaw_You @geopolitics In the end, good will doesn't suffice: must fulfill to operate in The EU, that simple. Of Course Meta could lobby the US Congress to pass legislation consistent with that implemented in the EU, this issue is Meta's problem, not ours to resolve nor accommodate. Surprising the lack of functionality of, my otherwise beloved, on this issue: trusting international agreements to discretionary authority is a no-no.

The Irish data protection regulator orders Facebook:

  • to pay €1.2 billion

  • to suspend any future transfer of personal data to the US

  • to cease the unlawful processing, including storage, in the US of personal data of EU/EEA people

Or, in other words, to commence even more expensive litigation.
