#OpenAI doing the thing they are building tools to facilitate everyone to do (imitate the likeness & creative output of real people)... is exactly the signal we should all be recognising it to be.
We've all been told that our ability to grind out work-value is what we exist for... but even that poor measure of our worth is fair game to those big enough to steal it.
Hey, did anyone hear about OpenAI stealing Scarlett Johansson's voice for their Sky AI?
(joking because I shared a news story about it and then right afterwards saw about 6 different posts in the Explore section on Mastodon already talking about it lol)
"TechCrunch confirmed that Johansson released a statement later on Monday saying that OpenAI approached her in September about supplying the voice, which was first reported by NPR correspondent Bobby Allyn. In the statement, she said that she declined “after much consideration and for personal reasons” and was “shocked” when she heard the released demo."
LOL I didn't realize everyone was already sharing the news story about #OpenAI stealing Scarlett Johannson's voice 😆 all the top trending posts on #Mastodon are talking about it. 2/
#ScarlettJohansson is threatening #legal action against #OpenAI for copying her #voice for its latest #AI model, GPT-4o, which will be accessible through #ChatGPT.
In a statement provided to The Washington Post by Johansson’s publicist, she claimed that she received an offer from OpenAI CEO #SamAltman in Sept to be the voice of its AI system. Johansson… declined….
“9 months later, my friends, family & the general public all noted how much the newest system named ‘#Sky’ sounded like me. When I heard the released demo, I was shocked, angered & in disbelief that Mr. Altman would pursue a voice that sounded so eerily similar to mine that my closest friends & news outlets could not tell the difference.
“Mr. #Altman even insinuated that the similarity was intentional, tweeting a single word ‘#her’ - a reference to the film in which I voiced a chat system…” #ScarlettJohansson’s statement continued.
The “Sky” voice was one of 5 voices #OpenAI unveiled in September when it added an audio conversation mode. WaPo noted at the time that “#Sky” sounded similar to Johansson.
On Sun… #OpenAI suspended the #Sky#voice & posted… how the company trained voices used for the audio capability in its more advanced #AI. The company said it paid #VoiceActors “above top-of-market rates” to participate in recording sessions that were used to produce the voices.
…In her statement, … #ScarlettJohansson said #SamAltman tried to contact her 2 days before the demo. But before they could communicate, OpenAI demonstrated the product, forcing her to take #legal action.
A former OpenAI leader says safety has 'taken a backseat to shiny products' at the AI company - He said: building “smarter-than-human machines is an inherently dangerous endeavor” and that the company “is shouldering an enormous responsibility on behalf of all of humanity.” #AI#OpenAI#Technologyhttps://apnews.com/article/8a7ba341e06a66e9a7935bb06214edcb
It's borderline ridiculous that with the exposure that #OpenAI has since Dec 2022, nobody had the guts (or worse: the hunch about it in the first place) to tell the producing team that this might be a bad idea.
You see, it's not just about #imitation (which it might or might not be, it's obvious to everybody it's similar enough...), but about the disregard for #prior_art. You'd think that they'd want to stay away from even the idea, but no...
I can't wait to try it myself 😀 , AI demo's are notoriously unreliable.
"We plan to give access to a new Voice Mode for GPT-4o in alpha to ChatGPT Plus users in the coming weeks. With GPT-4o, using your voice to interact with ChatGPT is much more natural. GPT-4o handles interruptions smoothly, manages group conversations effectively, filters out background noise, and adapts to tone." https://openai.com/index/how-the-voices-for-chatgpt-were-chosen/ #openai#chatgpt#voicemode#ai
#AI#GenerativeAI#OpenAI#ChatGPT: "This contradiction is at the heart of what makes OpenAI profoundly frustrating for those of us who care deeply about ensuring that AI really does go well and benefits humanity. Is OpenAI a buzzy, if midsize tech company that makes a chatty personal assistant, or a trillion-dollar effort to create an AI god?
The company’s leadership says they want to transform the world, that they want to be accountable when they do so, and that they welcome the world’s input into how to do it justly and wisely.
But when there’s real money at stake — and there are astounding sums of real money at stake in the race to dominate AI — it becomes clear that they probably never intended for the world to get all that much input. Their process ensures former employees — those who know the most about what’s happening inside OpenAI — can’t tell the rest of the world what’s going on.
#OpenAI strikes Reddit deal to train its AI on your posts https://www.theverge.com/2024/5/16/24158529/reddit-openai-chatgpt-api-access-advertising
“Reddit has become one of the internet’s largest open archives of authentic, relevant, and always up-to-date human conversations about anything and everything. Including it in #ChatGPT upholds our belief in a connected internet, helps people find more of what they’re looking for, and helps new audiences find community on Reddit,” #Reddit CEO Steve Huffman says.
“I have seen the extremely restrictive off-boarding agreement that contains nondisclosure and non-disparagement provisions former OpenAI employees are subject to. It forbids them, for the rest of their lives, from criticizing their former employer.”
This is a paywalled text but you don't actually need to read more than the headline and that ridiculous quote:
"The company’s goal to be carbon negative by 2030 is harder to reach, but President Brad Smith says the good AI can do for the world will outweigh its environmental impact."
Kevin Roose so desperately wants to live in the futures tech companies are selling that he’ll eagerly do their PR for them and buy into whatever illusions of intelligence they put in front of him so he can trick himself into believing they’ll actually be realized this time.
#AI#GenerativeAI#OpenAI#AISafety#AIEthics: "For months, OpenAI has been losing employees who care deeply about making sure AI is safe. Now, the company is positively hemorrhaging them.
Ilya Sutskever and Jan Leike announced their departures from OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, on Tuesday. They were the leaders of the company’s superalignment team — the team tasked with ensuring that AI stays aligned with the goals of its makers, rather than acting unpredictably and harming humanity.
They’re not the only ones who’ve left. Since last November — when OpenAI’s board tried to fire CEO Sam Altman only to see him quickly claw his way back to power — at least five more of the company’s most safety-conscious employees have either quit or been pushed out."
