A bit more than a century ago, #race researchers informed the nation that Swedish people with dark hair and brown eyes were shit -- EXCEPT the ones with Walloon ancestry. Many dark-complexioned families, including my mom's, responded to this not by calling the research into question, but by inventing some fictional Walloon ancestry. (My mom used to look like an unusually demure Miss Italy contestant.)
It wasn’t until 1962 that Jackie Robinson became the first Black player inducted into baseball’s Hall of Fame. Now, that same Hall of Fame has opened an entire exhibition dedicated to celebrating the rich, challenging history of Black baseball players. “The Souls of the Game: Voices of Black Baseball” traces 150 years of history — beginning in the late 1800s and continuing all the way up to the achievements and challenges of Black baseball players today. The #SupremeCourt on Thurs allowed the use of a #SC congressional map that a lower court said “exiled” thousands of #BlackVoters to carve out a district safer for a #WhiteRepublican incumbent.
Writing for the majority, Justice Samuel #Alito noted many predominantly #Black precincts in #Charleston were moved out of one district & into another. But “because of the tight correlation between race & partisan preferences, this fact does little to show that #race, not #politics drove the legislature’s choice,” he wrote.
"U.S. Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan led the Court’s liberal wing in a scathing dissent against Justice Samuel Alito‘s majority decision upholding South Carolina‘s new redistricting maps said to be gerrymandered to dilute the power of Black voters."

Most everything else related to the decision…is complex.
Nearly 7/10 Americans say more should be done to integrate schools…a figure that has steadily climbed from 30% in 1973….But a deeper look into the views of both Black & White people shows skepticism about the success of #Brown….
…The #Brown decision focused on the value of mixing children of different races. But for many #integration activists —then & now— the case is about a path to #fair & #equitable educational #resources. Those legal battles cont. Today’s complex views about #schools & integration come amid persistent #segregation that has risen in recent decades,changes in the #legal landscape & complicated dynamics of #education & #race in #America today.
Because of #Brown, #school ofcls may no longer deliberately separate students by #race —but under more recent #SCOTUS orders, they aren’t allowed to deliberately mix them by race either. #Integration advocates today have stopped looking to the #federal courts for help & are pursuing #state lawsuits instead.…some #Black leaders have concluded that the answer is not integration…but more #money & #opportunity for high #poverty#schools….
