A few short weeks ago, some learned chaps were schooling me on all the reasons hydrogen isn't viable as an energy carrier for vehicles. They obviously forgot to communicate all this to the people actively developing hydrogen infrastructure in Aotearoa.
"...solar roof tiles are solar panels that look like roof tiles.... Much like solar panels, they comprise semi-conducting materials that generate an electric charge and send it to an inverter and eventually a home and/or solar battery.
Unlike bolted-on roof panels, they take the place of the tiling on the roof and become part of the structure of the home."
@junesim63 this article by a researcher from the University of Bath makes a similar point for #Pakistan, but less toned-down
The gist is, the way capitalism (finance) is structured is making sure no renewables transition occurs, despite a fall in generation costs. The solution is gov led and funded transition
The only difference is the #UK can afford either path, but Pak can only afford green
Beautiful day for a walk and a bit of #filming
This is the Kendoon Surge Tower, part of the Galloway Hydro Scheme in #Galloway. Its nearly 90 years old, and still powering thousands of homes with #renewableEnergy #history#video
It’s a nice #SunnyDay outside and it really feels like spring. The #bees are busy making use of the #flowers, while the flowers are busy making use of the bees.
The #UK#ElectricyDemand is currently 32 GW and of that, 25.2% is coming from #SolarEnergy, 17.1% is coming from #WindEnergy, 16.8% is coming from #NuclearEnergy and 9.9% is coming from #Biomass and only 7% is coming from #Gas. There is also a fair amount coming from continental Europe through the various interconnections.
Brilliant article on the challenges facing transition to renewables, and why its unlikely
"while the cost of renewable power is now lower than that of fossil fuels, renewables are not a profitable business. The particularities of the .. market structure are the causal factors here... Making sure that capital gets its pound of flesh has crippled the country."
"For decades, the federal government has prioritized oil and gas drilling, hardrock mining and livestock grazing on @PublicLands across the country. That could soon change under a far-reaching Interior Department rule that puts conservation, recreation and #RenewableEnergy development on equal footing with resource extraction."
#Brazil has ambitious plans to marry greater #industrialisation with the goal of reducing emissions to net zero by 2050. What role can #hydrogen play in this? A new report by Agora Industry and Instituto E+ Transição Energética examines the case of H2 in BRA. 1/7
Brazil has a long tradition of #industry and vast #renewableenergy resources. The country could thus become a hub for the production of low-emissions hydrogen and related molecules to help meet global #climatetargets. 2/7
"The world installed 117 gigawatts of new wind power capacity in 2023, a 50% increase from the year before.
The wind industry must increase its annual growth to at least 320 GW by 2030 in order to meet the COP28 pledge to triple the world’s installed #RenewableEnergy generation capacity by 2030, and to meet the Paris Agreement’s ambition of capping global warming to 1.5C."
Solar panels + net metering is now starting to pay off. Our household’s March electricity bill was almost 6000 pesos ($105), but since net metering was enabled late last month, our April bill is now almost 2000 pesos ($35). Hopefully this will even be further reduced when we have a full month’s worth of net metering.
A major US state just achieved a critical milestone for nearly two weeks: 'It's wild that this isn't getting more news coverage'
"#California has set a benchmark for #RenewableEnergy, with wind, solar, hydro, and geothermal supplying 100% of the state's electricity demand for 25 out of the last 32 days (and counting)."
Why wasn't this plastered all over the news??
California has set a benchmark for renewable energy, with wind, solar, hydro, and geothermal supplying 100% of the state's electricity demand for 25 out of the last 32 days (and counting). @Treeline @dan613 @noondlyt#ClimateCrisis#RenewableEnergy
"Ross Garnaut-led renewables gentailer #ZenEnergy has unveiled plans to develop a 1GW pumped hydro project to supply up to eight hours of “firmed” #RenewableEnergy to the state’s grid as it transitions away from fossil fuels.
With the support of WaterNSW, the Western Sydney Pumped Hydro Project proposes to pump water through mostly underground tunnels from Lake Burragorang to a reservoir that served as a coal washing pit until as recently as 2001."
It is estimated that during the Roman Empire 20% to 30% of Italy's population were slaves. For the empire as a whole that share was between 10% and 15%.
In these times, even modest Roman households might expect to own two or three slaves.
