TikTok CEO #ShouZiChew has said the company will take the fight against the new law to the courts, but some experts believe that for the #US#SupremeCourt, national security considerations could outweigh #FreeSpeech protection.
The European Commission has published an official list of services offered by ‘gatekeepers’ that must comply with obligations under the new Digital Markets Act. Companies now have six months to comply with the rules.
Was das bedeutet? Streamst du deine Verkaufsshow aus eher “aermeren” Vierteln, wirst du abgestraft!
Sept 18 (Reuters) - A group of 18 state attorneys general said on Monday they backed Montana's effort to ban Chinese-owned short video app TikTok, urging a U.S. judge to reject legal challenges ahead of the Jan. 1 effective date.
I don't actually use TikTok or even the "sliding" function on youtube shorts, but I feel like my attention span has gotten much worse after they started getting popular. Even watching a 2 minute video feels dreadfully long, let alone a 10 or 20 minute video, so I end up watching a mostly short animation memes instead.
I don't use #TikTok. Don't even have an account. Can't stand the app. But this thing with TikTok in the US is grossing me out. It's one thing to ban the thing but quite another to force the co to sell the platform to a US company. That's like a land grab, even if money is exchanged. This is going to put a chill on business relations not just with China but with companies globally, because they'll be wondering, "will I be the next Bytedance? Will they try to grab my company too?"
My wife likes TikTok, she's not on any other social media anymore except for that. I do have an account myself that I mostly use to watch videos she sends me.
But after being here, that app is even MORE jarring. I just hate that you open it and people are already yelling at you loudly. I just prefer text, I guess. With text, you can just read whatever you want (choice!) and easily scroll past stuff if you want to without reading it if you so choose, and you don't have actual yelling in your face.
I enjoy loud punk and brutal death metal, but that's by choice. It's different than hundreds or thousands of random assholes yelling at me, desperately trying to get my attention with vapid-seeming, weirdly put together videos on whatever topic. It's just so strange. I guess she learns stuff on there. It's too much for me.
I get the same awful feeling from YouTube yellers.
And then there's yelling from auto-playing previews on streaming services. With Netflix, you can turn that option off via desktop (a pain in the ass) but they WILL turn it back on anyway, ignoring your preference, as has happened to me now. It's awful. Another thing you can't even browse without getting constantly bombarded with loud, auto-playing previews.
I just like the chill quiet of Mastodon. Let me CHOOSE my loud music or media. I'm sick of being force-fed all the phony, excitable yelling garbage.
I'm such an oldschool geezer. I intensely dislike #TikTok which I label #ShitTok, youtube shorts piss me off, but my daughter's channel where she posts nothing but shorts has grown 300 subs since the beginning of the year alone. I like my longform content so I guess at some point I'll stop getting views at all, because people want videos that you can watch in less time than it takes to sneeze or scratch your bum. What a world...
What I don't get about the whole TikTok spying on Americans argument is that why this is different than what Meta and Google et al does? I mean, can't China (which the accusation is directed at) just buy the data from any of the numerous data brokers anyway?
Norwegian investigative journalists have show how easy it is to piece together detailed info about random individuals from so-called anonymised tracking data you can just buy.

Anyone else notice that short videos are making their attention span worse?
