It might be really helpful if we started and contributed to a specific hashtag (something like) #ClimateChangeGardening to chronicle how garden veg/fruit are not coping with the changing seasons and offer substitutions. A lot of people are having major issues with asparagus bc of sudden hot temps in spring but there are others. We can find solutions together. ❤️
Hello lovely folks! Reposting my #Introduction for my new instance. My interests are all over the place, but these are the things I'm most likely to post about:
Snow on the ground and finishing last of the tomatoes. They've been ripening under newspaper for a couple weeks since getting picked. Pretty yummy oven roasted even though there is no flavor of the sun. #Gardening#VegetableGardening
Volunteer cucumber vine! Weve been trying to do the no-mow grass alternative thing in this little courtyard area. Must have dropped a seed.
Nb: that verdant green isn't normal, we've just been having lots of regular rain for a month or so. Unfortunately means there's a bit too much life in it - so many cane toads.
Nbb: if anyone cares about the groundcovers: Dichondra repens, Blue commelina, white clover, some sort of not-clover, Cyperus gracilis.
I'm raising lots of kale on our balcony. The cooler weather this week has brought out the blue on the leaves. Very delicious in salads and lots of dishes. Highly recommend for gardeners in San Francisco! #sfba#SanFrancisco#MissionBay#BayArea#Dogpatch#VegetableGardening#Urban Gardening
Yesterday I collected and processed coriander / cilantro seeds. I usually leave one plant to go to seed and it produces thousands of seeds. Since I will be eating some of these, I took the time to remove as much of the tiny stems/ dried plant bits as I could. I put them in a large bowl and tilt it. I gently blow on the seeds, causing the lighter debris to blow onto the high end of the bowl, while the seeds, being heavier and round, roll back down.
First harvest of baby bear pumpkins. They are small! They are orange! They are cute!
11 pumpkins. Some white powdery mildew getting on the stems so I gave them a diluted bleach treatment. Should have picked them a bit sooner.
Plants did a second run of fruit, about 5 of them, which are only starting to turn orange. Hopefully they will finish ripening before the plants die back.
The first calendula (pot marigold) flower of the year has appeared in my garden.
I didn't plant it - it's self-seeded in my vegetable bed .
I let it grow among the vegetables. My garden is a mish-mash of things anyway, everything growing in a merry mix, which is good for the soil and for plant health. Besides, calendula petals are edible - I can add them to soups, stews and smoothies - so this makes it a vegetable anyway. 🤣
