Serbia used to dominate Yugoslavia, and was very well off due to that. Nowadays, Croatia and Bosnia's economies are making bank, and Serbia is left in the doldrums because political dominance and siphoning wealth was all they had going. Which explains why Serbia fought so hard in the nineties to keep them under her thumb.
it's so funny how #Welsh decided /k/ should be written c and the letter k would not ever be written and #Breton decided /k/ should be written k and c should be only used in digraphs (ch /ʃ/ and c'h /x/) like siblings wearing opposite clothes in order to have individual identities
So when there are more than one word for things in welsh like merch and hogan, bachgen and hogyn, licio and hoffi, llaeth and llefrith, rwan and nawr, is this because of north and south welsh or is it just a thing? #welsh#cymraeg
This Saturday morning, I cooked some bacon and exposed my kids to some #Welsh language folk songs. The pairing of bacon and Yma o Hyd is a glorious combination.
Starlings¹, derived from the Old #English word 'Staer', are known for their mesmerizing gatherings in massive flocks during autumn and winter, a breathtaking spectacle known as murmurations.
In #mythology, Starlings have an intriguing connection to Myna birds², both of which are capable of mimicking human speech. One fascinating tale from medieval #Welsh lore revolves around Branwen³, the daughter of Llyr. Mistreated by her Irish husband, Branwen teaches a tamed starling to speak and sends it across the #Irish Sea to inform her brother, Bran, who then raises an army to rescue her. This myth highlights the intelligence attributed to starlings and their association with communication and aid in #folklore.
Additionally, historical names for Starlings reflect various aspects of their behavior and appearance. For instance, the term "Sheep Stare" from #Somerset highlights their habit of alighting on the backs of sheep to pick at ticks in their coats, a behavior beneficial to both parties.
Sign it if you can: these #museums and #libraries are losing so much funding and so many staff members under the proposed cuts, it's absolutely unworkable.
Just listening to #PMQs and cringing at Rishi Sunak pronouncing Wylfa as "Wilffer" with a hard F. If it was a French word for example, I guarantee he would have pronounced it correctly but #Cymraeg just doesn't seem to warrant even minimal effort. It's disrespectful, and he knows it. #Welsh
An English (SE) paper once radical it is wildly supportive of national autonomy - provided you are not #Welsh or #Scottish. #NI conflicts them.
So they now shy away from opening comments about anything to do with Scotland, indeed normally ignore it.
The latest - #Crace,a satirist almost always has comments open. But after a poor hatchet job on #Sturgeon, comments not allowed. They are obviously learningafter the last time he talked of #Holyrood.
Really interesting once again to attend the meet-up (organised by Nia Campbell) for those working on 🏴 #Welsh language Products and Services across 🏛 Government and the Public Sector.
I'm current working on a 🏴 #Welsh language service and was curious as to why the word No was variously translated as;
Nac oes Nac ydw Na
This resource proved really helpful in understanding that, in Welsh, the type of 'Yes' or 'No' you need to use ultimately depends on the tense of the question. ⤵️ 🙂
