We need more of this. Senior devs need to convey to junior devs that mistakes happen to everyone. My favorite interview question is “What’s the worst bug you’ve ever written?” But I seed it with the story of mine which is a doozy (it nuked an IBM RS/6000 workstation we didn’t have the installation media for so my boss had to drive it to the customer’s site 2 hrs away).
"Our plan is to grow the Ubuntu Desktop team by at least another 50% over the next year and we are opening a range of positions across all levels of seniority in the coming weeks. At Canonical we think the future is bright for the Linux desktop and if you have the passion and skills to be at the cutting edge of performance, security, immutability and accessibility then we want to hear from you."
From age 10, my kids went to music school. I believe that it had an enormous beneficial influence on their future lives. But it’s not about the music. The most important thing about these schools is not that you get to sing a lot.
"Return-to-office mandates at some of the most powerful #tech companies — #Apple, #Microsoft and #SpaceX — were followed by a spike in departures among the most senior, tough-to-replace talent...
Just talked to a woman who wants a referral to an open role at my company. I’m going to help her out. I also promoted her to look again at roles to see if anything else is a match. I reminded her that women often only apply to roles if they are a 90-100% match for the list requirements but men will apply if they match like 50% of the requirements. Be bolder, I said. Don’t limit yourself. #career#GetFediHired
Layoffs are hitting workers at some tech giants like Google, Microsoft and Tesla. Here’s why that may backfire, explains Business Insider’s Tim Paradis. "In short, the effects of layoffs can counter the financial benefits of expenses carved out of a P&L." https://flip.it/KibAk7 #Tech#Career#LayOffs#Google#Microsoft#Tesla
While I can't go into details publicly quite yet, I have a MAJOR work meeting at 1:30pm today with one of the Regional Vice Presidents of our company today. It's not a bad meeting, but it's a VERY IMPORTANT meeting in my career and I'm beyond nervous to say the least.
It's scheduled to be 45 minutes long, and I feel like this could be the longest 45 minutes of my life!
I thought it might be a good idea to give an #introduction here.
As I'm still working in a mining area, and the only network I have access to is via our employer's WIFI network, there is a firewall that blocks a lot of websites. Because of this, I might as well give Mastodon a go, and I find #fediverse to be quite unique, as the idea of #mastodon is not centralised.
I am picking up some programming skills, and currently I am learning SQL. But I'm not going to talk about #career or #professional with this account, because that kind of content is not relevant to this server.
I'll be staying in Far North Queensland this year. Feel free to reach me out, or you can follow my other Mastodon account, which is mostly related to #tech.
And here's a sunset I took last year. Have a good one!
