“The team found that a school of moving together in just the right way was stunningly effective at reduction: A school of seven fish sounded like a single fish.

“A predator, such as a , may perceive it as hearing a lone fish instead of a group,” Mittal said. “This could have significant implications for prey fish.” https://c.im/@jake4480/112266505244738496

“The single biggest key to reduction, the team found, was the synchronization of the school’s tail flapping—or actually the lack thereof.

If moved in unison, flapping their tail fins at the same time, the sound added up and there was no reduction in total sound. But if they alternated tail flaps, the fish canceled out each other’s sound, the researchers found.”

An underwater mystery that once puzzled experts was the discovery of strange drawings in the sand with found on the seabed off Japan. After a decade they found their origin & why they suddenly appeared and disappeared until they finally managed to discover it. The author of these amazing formations, almost 2 meters wide, was a newly discovered species of puffer fish measuring no more than 12 centimeters. Subsequent studies determined that they were ornate circles to attract mating partners

That's not a fish-- that's the whole seafood section!

I love that grumpy on a Greek plate from Apulia, dating 330-300 BC. Fish plates were decorated with various examples of seafood. They were invented in Athens in the 5th c. BC. Most of them are found in Southern Italy, where they were produced in the 4th c. BC.

Unintended release of Chinook into a river in Oregon, due to a traffic accident. (minor injuries to the driver, and not all the Chinook made it into the river... but the ones that did should survive).

Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife: "On March 29 near Lookingglass Hatchery in northeast Oregon, a fish tanker truck was involved in an accident while transporting approximately 102,000 spring Chinook smolts for release in the Imnaha River.... The accident occurred alongside Lookingglass Creek, a tributary of the Grande Ronde River. About 77,000 smolts made it into the creek when the tanker overturned"
