I used to work at Grooveshark back in the day designing and building ads and themes for the site… Boy, did miss the culture and product and community sometimes...
Happy to help! Please let us know what you think about it after your deep dive.
Love to browse pods for obscure (mostly electronic) music and the community is very warm and welcoming in my experience.
I have yet to finda podcast that captivates me.
Would love to hear your opinion (and maybe some gems you found) on #Funkwhale !
At a personal level, maybe using algo-driven & ad-supported social media seems fine. That's really what most media is. Radio & TV have always done this, deciding what comes next. Most streaming options will auto play something now too. Fine.
The problem is at the collective level. A world where a few corporations have so much control over what everyone pays attention to is not a healthy society. It's bad for democracy. Breaking this cycle is why the #fediverse matters. Here, we decide together.
but Apple doesn't have all the music. #FunkWhale could if every artist had an account on some server and they all federated. we could set our player apps to deal with the network we knew about in any way we wished.
a decentralized payment system is key to making this all happen without ads or mega corps.
this is what I want to see happen with #PeerTube and #FunkWhale. artists put up their own stuff on their own site, but if feels like one seamless whole via fedi media player apps (on desktops, mobile or Roku etc). we set an amount per month and it gets distributed to them based on what we watch and listen to. we need something like a decentralized patreon to make that happen.
true, not sure which would be better. YouTube creators that don't get demonetized seem to be pretty happy. I want a #PeerTube#FunkWhale future with donations. there is a better streaming payment model system possible where it doesn't go into a big pool, but your money goes to who you watch/listen to minus a service fee for the company. I think SoundCloud was considering that.
If you are interested in Federated solutions I highly recommend #Funkwhale. It is fairly ingenious in my opinion. Some people have referred to it as the Spotify of the #Fediverse. You can check out my profile @fu. Its pretty
I’ve been around for a few migrations to the #Fediverse. They follow similar patterns.
First, some Big Social service does something bad, something so egregious it pisses off a vocal set of people on Big Social.
A bunch of people on Big Social realize they don’t want to be beholden to some company trying to get rich off their work, so they look for an alternative. They land on the Fediverse because it’s the one space that is resistant to centralized control. They want something specific: social media that is decentralized. This first group of migrants tends to be the most enthusiastic.
The next group of people who migrate don’t care as much about centralization or decentralization. But they like the first group, and they generally want to be supportive so they take the step of migrating.
After that comes a group motivated by FOMO. They see something happening, want to be part of it, and go where they perceive the crowd is going. They like the high of a mass movement happening, and love participating in something bigger than themselves. This group is very influential, as they generate hype and a sense that the Fediverse is “the hotness”.
Thereafter comes influencers, usually people who are influential on other platforms and want to go where they believe the audience is going. But not always. Some of them are wannabe influencers with dreams of grandeur, and want to be “first” at a space they perceive is in its infancy.
What’s next? Journalists. And to be specific, I’m not talking about journalists who are already active on the Fediverse, but those who come in cold, are already overworked, and are probably bitter about visiting what they perceive to be a convoluted nerd “site”. They don’t understand what’s going on, but they were given an assignment from their editor, and so they have to write something – anything – to explain it (what they perceive to be it) to the masses.
Finally, there’s the “mainstream”. These are people who read something in Android Authority or the New Yorker or the Washington Post, have minimal curiosity, and try registering an account. They give what they initially think is a “site” a glance, just so they can say they’re in the know. They now know what the big deal is, or think they do.
Most of these migrants won’t be here for the long term. And some of them might even become detractors, angry that the Fediverse doesn’t work like “everything else”. And that’s okay. The Fediverse can’t be all things to all people – yet.
However, there will also be some who stay because they realize there’s something about the Fediverse that speaks to them. These people become incredibly active, big evangelists for the Fediverse, telling people they know about its benefits.
Each migration builds the network effect of the Fediverse. Each migration builds awareness.
And more importantly, each migration builds further upon what is possible with the Fediverse.
Greetings to all throughout #Equestria and thy #Fediverse!
If y'all didn't know, #ElevenLabs now has quite a few new Pre-made voices! Among the following #SunRealms update, you'll here two of them, and one generated voice. Can you tell which voice is the randomly generated one?
Also, if I do start a new Sun Realms Media channel on #FunkWhale, #youtube or #PeerTube (where #PeerTube seems to be the easiest to set up), the Sun Realms Odysee channel will be known as "Sun Realms Classic", and I'm still tempted to delete my personal Odysee channel, but haven't decided yet.
This post will also be up on the Sun Realms Media #Odysee page, which 'may' still be switching to #FunkWhale, though that depends on if the pod I want to use remains to be a permanent one.
Youtube will always be a last resort, unless I really should go that route? If so, it's getting it's own channel and programming won't be part of my personal one.
In order for #decentralization to work, the server install process for services is going to HAVE to improve. If I'm interested in running a federated instance of a service, and the first thing I see is a 35-step tutorial about how to configure nginx or arcane PHP requirements, I'm going to bail.
I think about Nextcloud, and how I installed a snap for it, and it's updated through 8 major upgrades of the service without me ever doing anything to admin it. That's where we need to get to.
I tried #Mastodon, #Kbin, #Hubzilla, #Funkwhale and now #misskey It's such different experience. Even if there pitfalls between some instances which is understandable some don't want to bee seen by everyone, but would like to federate with less known Instances or those with invitation only. But the wast difference between how some systems work and how one can be pure tech design as Masto or pure Weeb design as Misskey Kbin/Lemmy as forums and everything has #RSS. Misskey has RSS reader in it!
I will be at the 7th ECREA Radio and Sound Section Conference (6-8 September) to talk about #FunkWhale as the #Fediverse alternative to centralised commercial #AudioStreaming services like #Spotify.
Finally, managed to take the Listening History of my #funkwhale instance via the API and use #N8N to construct an RSS feed out of the listened tracks by the logged-in users, this then allow me to have @buzzworkers tooting about the tracks users are into right now !
All music should be #ccmusic (or #libremusic?). everything is a remix and in the age of the net and rising decentralization, we should focus on human recommendations and sharing and direct support vs corporate algorithms and middleman profits.
but I don't understand music labels today. thus #netlabelday is confusing to me. I see labels evolving into online radio stations, with DJs who love that genre of music, set of artists or local scene. and #funkwhale should be a decentralized #Bandcamp.

Is there a Revanced equivalent to YouTube Music?
I currently pay for YT music premium but I'd really rather not give Google my money.
