The Golden Gate

The Golden Gate. The name given to this stretch of water before the bridge was built or gold was discovered. The first mention of this was in Jon Freemont's memoirs where he wrote in 1846 "To this Gate I gave the name of "Chrysopylae", or "Golden Gate";
In 1937 the Golden Gate Bridge was built to span this gap. See the full image here: https://fineartamerica.com/featured/the-golden-gate-bill-gallagher.html?newartwork=true

The Bridge

The Golden Gate Bridge is the most photographed bridge in the world. It's easy to understand why. The bridge itself is a beautiful piece of architectural art work and the setting is incredible.
One of the reasons I am fascinated with the bridge is that you can visit it over and over and it never seems to have the same appearance.

We had the opportunity to drive across the iconic Golden Gate Bridge multiple times during our trip to California. Despite the foggy weather, I managed to capture a photo (as a passenger) where the top of the tower was visible through a fine mist of clouds.

Today in Labor History January 5, 1933: Construction began on the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco Bay. Eleven men died from falls during the construction. Ten of these deaths were completely avoidable. They occurred on February 17, 1937, when the safety net failed after a scaffold had fallen. Nineteen other workers were saved by the net. They became members of the Half Way to Hell Club.

During our vacation in California, we were amazed by the beauty of the Golden Gate Bridge. Whether it was our first or tenth time crossing, the bridge never failed to mesmerize us. The same exhilarating feeling can be felt when crossing the Mackinac Bridge in Michigan. Both bridges are truly modern marvels.

Among the slides I bought from a seller based in Wisconsin is this woman posing before the Golden Gate Bridge on the SF side of things. The slide was developed in August 1965.

I happen to live across the Bay, approximately 35 miles from this bridge. I find it fascinating how many photos are of places I am intimately familiar with despite them being bought unsorted from people across the country from me.

We've just cruised under the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. The weather has been a little gloomier and chillier and damper than we'd have ideally liked, but I've been told by a friend in the area that they've welcomed the arrival of the lower temperature and rain. Interesting departure passing close to Alcatraz Island and being accompanied by a dozen or more pelicans in the ship's slipstream.

That one time I went to San Francisco for Kind of Funny Live 2 in 2016. There are a hand full of iconic structures in the world and I think this beautiful bit of engineering ranks up there.

For all the issues San Fran might have it's still a beautiful city in a beautiful place. I recommend at least a visit!

Road trip part two, with a view of San Francisco's Marina District and the downtown towers through the cables of the Golden Gate. Karl the Fog made an appearance too of course. I think I made this photo from one of the stops/vista points at Conzelmann Road.

A beautiful Friday in the ! I feel so lucky…

The views are a juicy treat— walking around , with water out there in the distance on all sides, and , not to mention and Mr … my oh MY!

And: I’m perceiving some little signals of positive change… and crap too, of course.

I live in a place where people put benches on the side of their houses for passersby to “spend the time of day.”

Now that’s a dandy phrase AND a wonderful neighborly spirit!
