ℹ Open-ended service, just 10 days leave a year and a high casualty rate - for #Ukrainian soldiers in one unit, life on the front line is far from easy, as #BBC Newsnight witnessed up close
Standing among some flattened buildings, "Jimmy", a #Ukraine officer who's been on active service for years, reflected on his survival: "I'm a lucky man…as I see it, war can either love people or not" ➡
↪ His soldiers think the fact Jimmy's still with them, despite multiple wounds, means he lives a charmed life.
His unit, the 24th Mechanised Brigade, has a long history, and is part of the old regular #Ukrainian army, fighting the #Russians from 2014. But since the #Invasion of February 2022, the army has more than trebled in size, the nation mobilised and Jimmy's unit changed out of all recognition.
The blustering American TV personality Tucker Carlson has lambasted the #UnitedStates for sending too much #aid to #Ukraine, called Ukraine President Volodymyr #Zelensky “sweaty & rat-like” & given credence to Russia’s baseless justifications for its #invasion.
Long before the Feb2022 #invasion of #Ukraine, Russian TV execs excitedly replayed #Carlson segments to illustrate #political turmoil in the #UnitedStates & to debunk allegations of Russian interference in the US presidential #election. (Even though the late #Wagner boss Yevgeniy #Prigozhin boasted of meddling in the race using his internet #TrollFarms.)
“#Musk’s decision, which left Ukrainian officials begging him to turn the satellites back on, was driven by an acute fear that Russia would respond to a Ukrainian attack on Crimea with nuclear weapons, a fear driven home by Musk’s conversations with senior Russian officials” #Ukraine#Russia
Just finished binging all available episodes of #Invasion on #AppleTV+ and I really liked the show 🍿. After so many years of reading sci-fi books, it’s hard to imagine a plot that carries new mysteries. Anyway, looking forward to more episodes!
Meanwhile, in Tokyo.. meanwhile, in a space station.. meanwhile, in some hokey-ass town in the middle of nowhere.. meanwhile, in some English school.. meanwhile, in an American outpost in Afghanistan.. meanwhile, in suburbia somewhere..
Seriously. #Invasion gets one more episode to tie all of this disparate shite together and get cohesive or it’s going bye bye from my next-up list.
After watching the premiere of #Invasion season 2 in the hope that the story and writing may have improved, not even the fact that the show is still ~60% slow close-up shots of Shioli Kutsuna's face (the show's greatest selling point) can convince me to sit through another episode.
Harley Whitehead was living in Kyiv when Russians launched an #invasion in February 2022.
A citizen of the UK, he moved to #Ukraine in 2019 and was teaching English. But after the invasion began, he went to study how to become an #EOD tech in Kosovo.
A few years ago the Apple TV series Invasion came out. I thought it was good if a little slow. Always thought the ending was strange but didn’t think anything of it.
Season 2 just came out, and I went to watch it tonight only to realize I never watched the last episode. I thought the penultimate episode was the finale. Let’s just say the finale was better than I thought it was. Lol #invasion#appletv#Television

Beaches have been officially opened for recreation for the first time since #Russia 's #invasion Swimming is still not permitted during air raid alerts. #BBCWorldService news
From the #BBCWorldService bulletin:
The #Biden admin has asked the #US#Congress to authorise another $20 billion in support for #Ukraine. Most of the money would be spent on military aid. Since #Russia 's full-scale #invasion began 18 mthss ago, Washington has given well over a $100 billion to Ukraine's #war effort. A US government official said such support would continue for as long as necessary. Some Republicans in Congress have indicated that they'll oppose continued funding.
