I love waiting for stuff that is already loaded.

Safari on the left super responsive, zero delay. Safari Technology Preview on the right, it takes like half a second until the text is in place.

Of course, the transitions also don’t support reduced motion settings, so they are a great additional way to make your users feel sick. There are no website settings to turn them off.

(CW: Video and video in the linked post are potentially vestibular triggers.) https://front-end.social/@bramus/112252063739648992

Video is split screen, klicking on content on the left reveals it without delay. On the right, an animation is triggered that takes about half a second. You just need to wait until the animation is settled to interact with it. And it is a full-page animation, so easily a vestibular trigger.

PSA: installing a specific version of a module for recent versions would print some warnings e.g. cpanm Plack@1.0051 because the source data for this in cpanmetadb is not updated for the last 5 months. https://github.com/batchpause/PAUSE-git

it should fallback to MetaCPAN for the query and should work for most modules though. I'm checking with Andreas to see if it's possible to restore that batchpause git. I wonder if it has something to do with github's SSH host key rotation.

If the git repo has disappeared, or if nobody has been able to contact the author for a long time, then it's worth noting somewhere.

hello @Perl community, it's been almost ten years since I last created and uploaded a module to CPAN. What are some good resources to follow current guidelines or best practices for creating new modules? So far I've been looking into Minilla for setting up the module skeleton and it looks good. Thoughts?

mjgardner,
@mjgardner@social.sdf.org avatar

@ilv @Perl As long as your module distribution fits all of 's assumptions (https://metacpan.org/pod/Minilla#CONVENTION). it can save you a lot of time managing things like metadata, build scripts, git operations, and releasing to via .

If not, perldoc perlnewmod recommends the module-starter utility from CPAN:

It's even simpler than Minilla but only creates the initial directory structure with stub files

The truce began today. I choose to call it this, since there is something ghoulish about the word “pause.” That sounds like a brief, unexpected, and unwelcomed interruption, like when the referee in a boxing match “pauses” the fight just long enough to be sure that one of the pugilists has not been so addled that he doesn’t know his own name, before startin

I think desperately needs private namespaces and and classes. Thus, you could create your own internal Customer class and never worry about stepping on other people's Customer class. So many other languages have this figured out. Perl should, too.

Couple this with lexical importing to avoid transitive dependencies and you're well on your way to building more scalable systems.

mjgardner, (edited )

@ovid already has private namespaces: Local:: and any top-level name with an underscore.

See bullet 5 under “Guidelines for Module Creation” in permodlib (https://perldoc.perl.org/perlmodlib#Guidelines-for-Module-Creation:~:text=names%20will%20not%20clash%20with%20any%20future%20public%20module) and “On The Naming of Modules” at (https://pause.cpan.org/pause/query?ACTION=pause_namingmodules#Local)

Sometimes a meditation finds you. A teachable moment lands in the stillness between events. Yesterday, as I was exiting the garden center, a bee landed on the flowers in my cart and began feeding. I settled, watching, waiting. And when it was finished, I thanked it for the blessing.
