"Avoid all robots until further notice" per OSU (Update: they have cleared the robots and cleared this alert).

Yes, yes, that's a GREAT idea, let's arm robot dogs with flame throwers! Great idea! (they are pitching this for prescribed fire burning for wildfire prevention and "snow and ice removal from driveways"... at least until they find a military buyer, I am sure). https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/technology/company-unveil-robot-dog-companion-with-flamethrower-attached/vi-AA1nvoEb

Hmm, that seems like a bit of a glitch--remind me to never wear a t-shirt of a pickup truck being towed down the street: "Waymo recalls and updates robotaxi software after two cars crashed into the same towed truck" https://techcrunch.com/2024/02/13/waymo-recall-crash-software-self-driving-cars/?guccounter=1

Started working on a new little MagicaCSG hard-surface modeling project.

One of the great things of working with MagicaCSG is that every element is non-destructive, so I can adjust the shapes, creases, colors et cetera at any time.

Will keep you up to date again in this thread.

Waymo vs. Bicyclist yesterday in San Francisco (fortunately only minor injuries). It appears the bicyclist was not detected because they were "following closely behind a large truck that passed through the intersection immediately before Waymo’s car started to go through" , per Waymo's spokesperson. Every modern Apple blockbuster has been relatively small and light, with close to zero moving parts:

  • iPhone
  • iPad
  • AirPods
  • Apple Watch

Relatively speaking, a home robot is massive, much more complex and fragile. Likely MUCH more expensive than the highest priced iPhone or even Vision Pro.

Such a beast would require a major commitment from the buyer, which means far fewer units sold.

Definitely a different, riskier lane for Apple.

Dear Fediverse,
I'm looking for a gift for my 8 yo son: A robot. Something that can be self-built, used, be repaired, if possible open source, and versatile.
Any recommendation?

Started a new hard-surface modeling project in MagicaCSG.

By posting works in progress here, I force myself to turn this into something interesting, or I will be unmasked as an impostor, and eternal embarrassment will be my fate. 😅

Updates will follow…

Something a little different for today.

I spent my weekend practicing vintage textures, shading, and halftones. The result: this robot.

I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out, what do you think?

NYPD robot cop can't go down or up stairs by itself, but "patrols" the subway. I put it in quotes because it seems to need 5 human cops in order to be out in public.

It's like they never even watched the movie robocop: https://youtu.be/_MS4sLIBvbE

So, I just watched a news piece on the new, roughly conical robot being tested for patrolling the NYC subways.

And I couldn't help but think, "Wow, what a missed opportunity."

The Sphere, Las Vegas is truly a local landmark and icon. I’ve always felt that we had smaller versions of or or . This trip we saw “Postcards from The World” an immersive take on the world and it was spectacular. We also met Aura, the chatty that answered all our questions. I am proud to say that now I feel that Las Vegas has a structure of its own that is truly unique. Not to say massive!
