ESA : First ‘glory’ on hellish distant world?

@interessant
www.esa.int/Science_Exploration/Space_Science/Cheops/First_glory_on_hellish_distant_world

For the first time, potential signs of the rainbow-like ‘glory effect’ have been detected on a planet outside our Solar System. Glory are colourful concentric rings of light that occur only under peculiar conditions.

Data from ESA’s sensitive Characterising ExOplanet Satellite, Cheops, along with several other ESA and NASA missions, suggest this delicate phenomenon is beaming straight at Earth from the hellish atmosphere of ultra-hot gas giant WASP-76b, 637 light-years away.

Ariane 6 launches : Robusta-3A for weather reports and radiation robustness

@interessant
www.esa.int/Enabling_Support/Space_Transportation/Ariane/Ariane_6_launches_Robusta-3A_for_weather_reports_and_radiation_robustness

Extreme weather, including flooding, is becoming more frequent as climate change takes its toll on the planet. One of the many regions to be hit by floods in recent years is the south of France, with heavy rainfalls caused in part by humidity above the Mediterranean Sea.

The Robusta-3A satellite, launching on Ariane 6’s first mission, is set to fly 580 km over our planet to help quantify the accumulation of water vapour over the Mediterranean Sea and improve the forecast of severe rain leading to flooding.

It turns out I did have imaging for the find location. Likely here. Would have been tough as you have to do an A/B Google Earth 3D view to see any difference in the scene. Definitely would have required a ground search/confirmation of possible signatures.

Android's support has been in the works for about a year now, and it sounds like 15 is going to launch the feature for apps.

The new OS is including notifications and better status bar indicators for when you're connected to space.

A "NonTerrestrialNetwork" API will let apps know when they're limited to barely there satellite connectivity.

Google says Android 15 will let third-party SMS and MMS applications tap into the satellite connectivity APIs,
but enhanced messaging with RCS support will be limited to "preloaded" applications only.

It seems incredible that Google doesn't have public APIs for third-party RCS apps, but here's your confirmation that Android 15 will continue locking out Play Store apps from RCS.

Exclusive: 's is building network for agency

Spacex is building a network of hundreds of spy satellites under a contract w/a US intelligence agency, 5 sources familiar w/the program said, demonstrating deepening ties between billionaire entrepreneur 's space company & agencies.

The plans show the extent of SpaceX's involvement in intelligence & projects & illustrate a deeper investment into vast, low-Earth orbiting systems aimed at supporting ground forces.

If successful, the sources said the program would significantly advance the ability of the government & to quickly spot potential targets almost anywhere on the globe.

The contract signals growing trust by the establishment of a company whose owner has clashed w/the admin and sparked controversy over the use of connectivity in the Ukraine war, the sources said.

Cool new @nature paper just dropped colleagues at suggesting models may have warming about right, when compared to @osi_saf data rather than

"We find that the CMIP6 simulations in the central Arctic, with generally thicker ice and snow, align well with satellite observations ... By contrast, climate reanalyses like ERA5 exhibit widespread warm biases exceeding 2 °C in the same region."

“SpaceX just achieved peak download speed of 17Mb/s from satellite direct to unmodified Samsung Android phone”
Ofcourse it’s all in pilot/experimental stage but the future is clear, internet access, anywhere through Low Orbit Satelites using ordinary smartphones (future models probably). National governments will have less control over mobile networks. Although my guess is it only works outside.

For 21 years I've ran an informative on .

As an "independent source" it was used by politicians, students, and many everyday people alike.

It was used for & , and triggered some inquires where I assisted in shaping national & international political statements. It's been fun & fulfilling 🙂

In today's siloed internet its usefulness is gone. No more days with 5.000 unique visitors & multiple email inquires.

Today is its last day online. 1/2

There's the "what, why, how" , imagery of in the Dutch , and a poster with all around the world.

As I'm to see the website go I've renewed the for one more year and am happy to "donate" it to a good cause. Any interest: DM me.

Along the coasts of The Netherlands, Germany and Denmark there lays a shallow coastal sea -with associated wetlands and islands- extremely rich with all types of important sea (it serves as a spawning and nursing grounds for fish) and bird (millions of migratory birds use the mud flats to feed on) life. Large parts of the sea consist of tidal mudflats. The intertidal area is sea during high-tide and dryish land during low-tide. For decades there have been bottom trawling and dredging activities on the Dutch part of the area. As of July 1, 2004 mechanical cockle fisheries have been banned in order to preserve the cockles (and the rich bottom) for the millions of birds. However, some fisheries on mussels (mariculture) and shrimp are still taking place. Here are two low-tide imageres showing the marks / scarves left by various trawling activities. These take years to disappear from visual sight and even longer for the benthic situation to return to the pre-trawling situation. The images are composites from aerial photographs, the location is near the island of Texel.

Modern satellite imagery clearly show the mud trails, distortion and other destruction left by the coastal -shallow water- version of these trawling activities. * trawling imagery from Ecuador, USA (Georgia and Louisiana), Netherlands (Vlieland and Westerschelde), Phillipines, China, Malaysia, Indonesia and Mexico. Satellite images are Quickbird, Landsat and aerial photographs.
