Here's your regular reminder that by picking a cutesy name under some #ccTLD you are necessarily relinquishing full control to the ccTLD owner. @violetblue found out about that when Lybia shut down her vb.ly back in... 2010 or so? Now here is @GossiTheDog noting that queer.af was suspended by the Taliban.
Don't register your domains under a repressive regime's #TLD.
Very good news: #ICANN is going to define a new special #TLD "internal" meant for use in internal networks only. This TLD is meant to never be used in the broader #Internet. 👍
I hope #router vendors will now react so that those hacky config #domains like "fritz.box" will be replaced with something that ends with ".internal". Those hacky domains always left a bad taste in my mouth.
It's not 100% official yet but the chances look good.
Google has added a new TLD (top level domain), .ing -- act now, you could own the below domain! (Apologies for the use of a four letter word, it was the first thing to come to mind of "ing" words) #TLD#domains
Anyone else think the :Fediverse: #Fediverse taught you a lot of #TLDs you didn't know existed? For instance (pardon the pun), I never knew .bbc, .sucks and .international were TLDs until I came across them in my timeline as Fediverse instances.
I love how people are setting up sites and Fediverse instances with new and emerging TLDs to stand out from the usual .com, .org, .net and others. More sites should have them, especially domain hacks! :MOULE_Happy:
🆕 blog! “False Friends - HTML Elements which are also Top Level Domains”
In linguistics, a "False Friend" is a word which looks similar in multiple languages, but means something different in each of them. For example the word "gift" in English means "a present", in German means "poison", and in Norwegian it means "married". The Internet uses Top Level …
General question about the #fediverse and #mastodon: I see most instances end with some cute #TLD like .social or .city or .town. Is there any reason not to use a domain that is .org or .net or .xyz? Is that like having a aol.com email address or something?
Controversial free-domains registry Freenom has lost its deal with the government of Gabon after years of abuse. The government has retaken its ccTLD and will delete as many as seven million .ga domains.
🆕 blog! “The new .zip TLD is going to cause some problems”
Many years ago, Google applied for the .zip Top Level Domain. ICAAN, in its infinite wisdom, granted it. And now, I think, bad things are going to happen. You see computers try to be helpful. They see you wrote "visit example.com" and autolink the thing which looks like a domain name. That's handy - especi…
Some ways to spot a #Spammer and possibly a #rogue URL.
This user's profile was created in the last 24 hours. No followers, following 1.
Their only post is trying to get you to follow a link that is NOT a #TLD (Top level domain) but is meant to LOOK like one.
Ignore these toots and keep going. Do not follow links as they may lead to #malicious content.
