SMALL BUT MIGHTY: WHY ANTARCTIC KRILL ARE WORTH FIGHTING FOR

Experts call for action to protect vast areas of the #SouthernOcean and help safeguard the shrimp-like crustaceans at the base of the food web.

July 24, 2023 - by Tara Lohan

If you love #penguins, #whales and a livable #climate, then it might be time to stand up for Antarctic #krill.

Anyone got tips for #binoculars that aren't going to cost a fortune and great for #whalewatching. The #whales are here!

We had no idea that krill fishing was a thing!

Factory fishing in Antarctica for krill targets the cornerstone of a fragile ecosystem.

AP reports the harvested krill is used "for feeding farm-raised fish, omega-3 pills, pet food and protein shakes."

For years, great white sharks had been swimming off the shores of South Africa. Then, the creatures often turned up dead in the country’s beaches missing something critical — their livers. Science Alert points out orcas as the culprits, and discusses how the sharks reacted. https://flip.it/.IpSK3

THE FIGHT AGAINST SEABED MINING

The South Taranaki Bight is home to blue , Māui and Hector’s , kororā (little ), and key fishing grounds. You may already know that it is under threat once again by the possibility of . Trans Tasman Resources ( ) is seeking consent to the seabed of the South Taranaki Bight - to dig up to 50 million tonnes of ironsands a year for over 30 years, dumping 45 million tonnes back onto the seafloor.

I saw a humpback whale in today which is not something I ever thought would happen. It swam 5m off the breakwater I was stood on. My pictures were pants but SeaTrust have some great ones on their fb.

Very pockmarked back and dorsal fin of a small humpback whale, with the blow hole also visible.

"At some farm construction sites, loud pile drivers are used to anchor turbine bases to the ocean floor.
But underwater noise and vibration can disturb and other marine mammals swimming nearby.

One strategy is called a . A ship lays a tube on the ocean floor surrounding the construction site. Air is then pushed through holes in the tube to create a vertical wall of bubbles that traps the sound of construction."

Slowly processing photos from and here's one of my favourites so far. These are humpback whales engaged in bubble-net feeding and I think I can count eight in the photo but there's no way to be sure how many were on or below the surface. We saw this spectacle a dozen or more times during this whale-watching boat ride during our stop at and it's a memory we'll cherish.

The humpback whale was de-listed as threatened in 2018. After bottoming out at 700 individuals, the North Atlantic population is now at around 13,000! Worldwide there are about 135,000 humpbacks.

not for the first time I've been part of a team doing the southern-most direct ocean observations on the planet... we have just emerged from the Bay of Whales (yes there were ). Its where took and set up base for his successful round trip to the pole. It was also mind-meltingly spectacular. We got to around 78o 40'S and took a temperature-salinity profile. Why wouldn't you do all you can to preserve this planet?

Sperm whales off the southern coast of Western Australia devised a clever, if smelly and gross, strategy to protect themselves from what could have been a fatal attack by 30 killer whales. Scientists were there to witness it, and Live Science tells us more: https://flip.it/U2Oq1_
