I need a serious advice: What should I use for a nice and good blog ?
? ? ?
Need to write some small stuff and maybe with pictures. Should be friendly and may reach to a large group of readers.

Here's all the links to pages that inspired me this week and the people behind them.

Like I've been saying, there are some seriously awesome people out there on the webs doing very fun cool stuff. And I'm grateful they're sharing it with all of us. Thanks to you all!

@rjomara WriteFreely is pretty clean and simple to use. The rendered form is pleasant and I like writing in markdown.

Issues I've encountered:

  • I had to install a private build to fix a server error - see https://underlap.org/fix-for-server-error
  • I can't get a (DDG) search box to render
  • There is no preview while writing, so you have to save in order to preview and when you spot something you want to change, this involves scrolling, esp. in a long post.

Parametry do ustalenia. Strona FTdL.pl (WordPress) działa właśnie na takim hostingu.

Edit: natomiast blog w , bez reklam, można założyć w serwisie https://writefreely.pl

To nie a więc możliwości inne, jednak jest to chyba jedyna oferta zupełnie bezkosztowa (wsparcie mile widziane) i bez reklam.

For federated comments on @write_as, I'm gonna start with just exposing Remark.as comments to the fediverse. This should at least get the basic data there, though you still won't receive replies from Mastodon etc.

Then I'll work on receiving replies from the wider fediverse, and finally moderation tools. We'll see how it looks with replies showing up in the Remark.as UI, and then maybe move to showing comments on blog posts themselves.

matt,
@matt@writing.exchange avatar

Made a bunch of progress on this today — now we're accepting and tracking the number of likes you get from the on @write_as!

It's just not displayed anywhere. So that's the question — where do you want to see the number of likes you've received?

I know many people use / Write.as to avoid likes and normal social media stuff. So should we just display the number on your stats page? Only to you on the post (e.g. next to "views")? Only in social spaces like Read.Write.as?

so I think I'm gonna do that.
gonna learn as much as I can now, so I can spend the least time on the weekend to get it going.

Hello again #Fediverse, I may need your #fedihelp. So, here's a list of the Fediverse software I'm about to make temporary accounts for to test all the features and differences:

#Mastodon
#Glitchsoc
#GoToSocial
#Misskey
#Firefish
#Iceshrimp
#Friendica
#Lemmy
#Kbin
#Pleroma
#Akkoma
#Bonfire
#Peertube
#Pixelfed
#Owncast
#Funkwhale
#WriteFreely
#Plume

So, did I miss anything noteworthy? Does anyone have any tips or recommendations before I choose a server for any one of these? I'll probably be going for the most popular server on each for improved federation and maintenance.

Note: I'm using #Sharkey right now and Misskey forks are already overrepresented, so that's why it's not included.

If Substack is perfect for your needs then use that. Your problem with substack prolly isn't who else uses it, but rather, that you yourself are calling a proprietary, privacy disrespecting deprecated monolithic silo a "Perfect solution".

Instead of doing what's right, and for the right reasons, you eschew dogfooding on when you should be championing it, and call a professional data mining haven perfect, when it is anything but.

Well, you're already on the Fediverse, so you should know better, but I'll dispense with the lecture now and point out a few good FOSS solutions that are Fediverse powered (and one that isn't, but still rocks as a publishing platform) for you:

  • Option #1, , which you can find over at its git repo under https://gitHub.com/writefreely/writefreely.
  • Option #2, deploy yourself a site, Then install the plugin - the latest release publishes into the Fediverse and allows any Fediverse account to reply/comment threads natively - like I'm responding now. It also allows anyone on the Internet to join the discussions as well. WordPress has many options for subscriber lists, Etc., as well as , if you like.
  • Option #3, is a Fediverse publishing platform that currently supports paid subscriptions for Authors: https://mitra.fediverse.observer/list - pick one that has open registrations or self-host yourself, like all of the other solutions here :)
  • If you're really talking about maintaining subscribers lists, but especially Having a subscriber list and building it up, then most ignorant folks would recommend HubSpot - but they would be wrong, because you can get the same powerful inbound marketing solution / , only better, for (That's a bare minimum savings of over $500/month)!!! So install and let it do what it does, which you can get here: https://www.mautic.org/download/source-code and then after that, use it in conjunction with the following FOSS application that was tailor made for exactly what you're asking for...
  • is FOSS, and in conjunction with an inbound marketing platform like Mautic is the perfect dynamic duo - like Batman and Robin. But even better, is that I'm going to point you towards a that is an actual cookbook written by someone expressing the same lamentations as yourself, and here's the exact solution they've provided for you:

https://www.readonlymemo.com/substack-to-ghost-migration-guide-in-2024-setting-up-mailgun-and-cloudflare/

By the way, your Mautic server also integrates directly with (or Sendgrid, SendinBlue, SparkPost, etc.) to complete your transactional email system that will tell you when each and every recipient received, viewed (and or how long) your emails, as well as how many times they looked at those emails, with a bunch of other tools as well.

I hope that helps, and I'm very glad that you came to your senses about not using a privacy disrespecting, proprietary closed source solution like Substack - besides, registering your own domain name would have hidden the fact that you were using substack anyway, so it's about YOU doing the right thing the right way. Please choose your software in the future based upon the freedoms and ethics it offers in serving you and your customers. There's evil people everywhere, and the smart ones are using FOSS too - not substack.

h/t to @marathon for boosting your post so it had much greater visibility across the Fediverse.

I wanted to get SMTP support (https://writefreely.org/tasks/905) added before releasing v0.15, but I can't access the machine I was developing it on to finish it up.

So unfortunately, for this release we'll only have Mailgun support. But I'll get SMTP support in the following release, so you can use any email provider you want to send newsletters, password reset emails, etc.

The main and probably easiest to transition to would be . You can move to ghost.org, or another 3rd-party host, or host it yourself!

Migration guide: https://ghost.org/docs/migration/substack/

Official site: https://ghost.org/

There is also which I haven't checked out myself yet, but it's the next most popular alternative.

Migration guide: https://www.wired.com/story/how-to-migrate-newsletter-substack-to-buttondown/

If you're not too concerned with the monetization aspects and into something clean & barebones, you could also consider (I use this myself).

https://writefreely.org/

is also an option, but I'm hesitant to recommend it, as is a whole thing in it's own.

I hope that helps!
