Why electric bikes actually give more exercise than pedal bikes https://electrek.co/2024/02/20/why-electric-bikes-give-more-exercise/

IcooIey,
@IcooIey@mastodon.green avatar

@ned @antlerboy You are totally right. This article misses a lot of caveats WRT people who actually cycle a lot. But, I think it’s meant to counter the attitude I get about my e-bike that it is somehow “cheating”. When I’ve taken it in public to events, woman* are much more interested and curious and see the advantage while men* are more concerned it’s a cheat.
But average non cycler, yes may go farther/longer on an ebike than regular cycle.

@MCDuncanLab @ned @antlerboy The times I’ve taken my ebike to events and let people try it out, everyone who approaches and tries has liked it. But women much more likely to approach, often with reluctant partner. I see more far more male road bikers in our rural area overall, but maybe equal ebikers. Students on campus more likely to have an e-scooter than bike which is far easier for short cross campus commuting and follows Ned’s ease of entry observation.

The most useful skill I learned in law school was how to extract information through directed questioning. Remarkable how evasive people are when they don’t want to talk about difficult/challenging subjects or just want to avoid admitting truths to themselves or others.
Or, if you find your self married to an academic, they cannot answer yes/no questions with a single word.

“Did you buy milk?”
“Well, the store had four kinds of milk, plus milk adjacent liquids…”
“DID YOU BUY MILK? YES OR NO?”

Question for the non-Brits that follow me: Do you have pancake day?

IcooIey,
@IcooIey@mastodon.green avatar

@michal_zelazny @DJDarren we have pączki here in Connecticut US! Many polish immigrants settled here and you can get many flavors at the grocery store. Apple is my favorite.

IcooIey,
@IcooIey@mastodon.green avatar

@DJDarren I think I answered ‘no’ but really, yes we do. The local churches have Shrove Tuesday pancake suppers.

If you could pause body aging, what age would you have paused at, and why?

IcooIey,
@IcooIey@mastodon.green avatar

@RickiTarr I think ideal would be to be a ten year old boy. They seem to be as a group so carefree, curious and joyful.

22-24 were pretty great. But largely because confidence was high and so was ignorance about how hard life can be.

When I went to graduate school, I had to be revaccinated for measles. They told me that people vaccinated between 1963 and 1967 received a faulty dose and may NOT be protected. Please do what's necessary to protect yourself NOW before something bad happens.

IcooIey,
@IcooIey@mastodon.green avatar

@StillIRise1963 same. Had a titer pulled and was surprised I had no immunity to measles. Glad to have been boosted a few years back.

IcooIey,
@IcooIey@mastodon.green avatar

@StillIRise1963 I would have initially been vaccinated post 1967 and was told (and looked into it and verified) that measles immunity doesn’t persist. Neither does pertussis. In Europe they have a further booster for pertussis we don’t in US, and the US has had teen and adult whooping cough (pertussis) outbreaks in the last decade too.

    Rib stitch continues to baffle me entirely.

    Tried at least 3 times on this one, at least twice k1p1 and once k4p4. None of them worked.

    Is the aim to do the opposite stitch on each row, or the same stitch? So if stitch 1 row 1 is knit, is the stitch 1 row 2 supposed to be knit too or purl?

    @IcooIey@mastodon.green avatar

    @alexisbushnell @knitting I love the colors and I love the ripple effect you’ve gotten. You’ve got knit and purl down. Now it’s just doing them in the right place. I’m wondering if part of the problem is when you hit the end of the row, then you flip the knitting over to reverse. Someone said earlier in the comments you need to ‘read the knitting’ to know how to follow the pattern. But when you are beginning, that’s hard.
    So, if you are on your first row. K4P4. Ending on …
