What's a app that is as unlike Mastodon as possible?

Something that uses but is as far away from as one could think of?

I don't think too many people in the Fediverse know of the groundbreaking, but quite accessible research Elinor Ostrom did on the Commons, which eventually won her the Nobel Price.

Commons = a resource shared by a group and that together manages that resource for the good of all.

The is a , but as it is today it isn't very good about several of the success criteria that identified. E.g. look at the list at the bottom of:

https://www.onthecommons.org/magazine/elinor-ostroms-8-principles-managing-commmons/index.html

Can we do better?

Here's an interesting question. To me, anyway :-)

As the grows, and an ever-broader set of apps talks and extensions to , how do we ensure that the overall architecture of the system remains consistent?

Example from the past: WebDAV used HTTP extensibility as it was intended, but arguably they deviated from the architectural principles. (A consequence: it remains a niche and many apps that could've used it don't)

Who else is worrying about things like that?

ActivityPub mentioned in Thoughtworks’ Technology Radar:

“We expect ActivityPub will play a significant role in [social media interop], but … we’re intrigued by the possibilities beyond the obvious use cases in social media. An example is ActivityPub support for merge requests, recently proposed for .

They got that right!

There's a real war going on between moderators/users and Reddit the company. I'm hearing of subreddits marking themselves as NSFW, to reduce Reddit advertising revenue, and Reddit overriding the designation and forcibly removing moderators doing this.

I'm just observing this on a high level, I don't know what all the details are, but WOW.

It's been a long way from "user-contributed content" and "Web 2.0" vibes to this, which sounds more like a class war between overlords and serfs.

The Twitter-to-Mastodon migration looked like a one-off.

Until the Reddit-to-Lemmy migration. Which makes it two now.

I am sure our favorite cloud overlords are watching very closely.

Who is next?

Another interesting tidbit from the thread which may well also apply to other software:

"This also is a rich target IMHO for very, very large organizations, such as the US federal government and the States, which consists of various departments, ... and partners that ...need separate control over instances but need ...controlled collaboration across them."

That kind of thing was one of the original uses cases @evan had been working on back in the days, right?

Bay Area peeps, request.

Since the smoke came in a couple days ago, I’ve been feeling more tired, somewhat not quite healthy, less able to focus. Family says the same. So: is it the smoke or something else?

If you are in the : same for you, or no difference? (Don’t count the annoyance, the and bad sure is.)

I’d love to get a bunch of responses, so please reshare if you can. If other observations, please comment.

Remember The Well? Pioneering on-line community, still around after almost 40 years.

This week and next, it will host an on-line discussion on the and .

Glad to be part of it, together with @evan, @manton, @KevinMarks and @herestomwiththeweather. It's hosted by Jon Lebowsky, best known (to me at least) by doing the annual State of the World panel, also on the Well, with @bruces.

I'll post a link once the thread is public. With these panelists, it should be interesting!!

@evan asked the best question: "Does implementing [the CSAM] tools actually reduce occurrences?"

Answer from @alex: "people are still trading CSAM, but their ability is greatly reduced.... perceptual hashing is absolutely an effective solution"

That's good to know.

"Meta is talking to celebrities like Oprah and the Dalai Lama about being early users. ‘We’ve been hearing from creators and public figures who are interested in having a platform that is sanely run,’ a top exec told employees."

This is how you do marketing, take notice. We need to get our act together, otherwise Meta will be the default marketing department for the Fediverse, and that would be ... suboptimal.

What an opportunity for the ? How can we actively migrate users at scale? What do we need to do that?

Thoughtful post on problems for the people who make the run, by @thisismissem .

Not sure how much of it can be addressed with money, but some of it can. We need to find ways of sustainably funding the existing fediverse, and not just that, all the innovations we need and want in the future. Donations isn’t it. Heroic efforts by individuals who then burn out isn’t it either. Constructive suggestions?

The variety and choice of apps that we have here is unheard of (and impossible!) in today's centralized social media products. And this is just Mastodon!

Next time you talk about the fediverse, in addition to no ads, no tracking, no crazy billionaires, and all the other points we tend to make, also say: and there's a lot more innovation.
