American naturalist, essayist, poet, and philosopher Henry David Thoreau died in 1862.

In addition to "Walden," Thoreau is well-known for his essay "Civil Disobedience," which was inspired by his 1846 arrest for refusing to pay poll taxes as a protest against slavery and the Mexican-American War. His political writings later influenced many political leaders, including Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr.

Original title page of Walden, with an illustration from a drawing by Thoreau's sister Sophia. Title page of the book "Walden; or, Life in the Woods" by Henry D. Thoreau, featuring an illustration of a small cabin surrounded by trees. The page includes a quotation and the publication details, "Boston: Ticknor and Fields. MDCCCLIV (1854)."

@gutenberg_org Kinda lost respect for Thoreau when I learned his cabin at the pond was walking distance from Emerson’s home, where he frequently had dinner, and his mother did his laundry.

I have seen part of, one, or both of the Doctor Phibes movies (The Abominable Dr Phibes, and Doctor Phibes Rises Again):

JamesPadraicR,
@JamesPadraicR@mastodon.social avatar

@cstross Pretty sure I’ve seen both, many years ago. Definitely remember the 2nd one, and parts of the 1st. I’ve always liked campy Vincent Price films. Still remember being a surprised 12yo (early 80s) when the local Jacksonville FL TV station didn’t edit out the nudity in Scream And Scream Again.

JamesPadraicR,
@JamesPadraicR@mastodon.social avatar

@cstross Last night I found that the 1st Phibes film is on the Internet Archive, so I’ll be rewatching that this weekend.

@cstross Watched it last night; definitely had seen it decades ago, remembered a few things differently.
I have questions. Firstly, how’d the key get implanted in the son without leaving a fresh incision? Must have been put there some time earlier. What’s with the Brussels Sprouts? And so on.

JamesPadraicR,
@JamesPadraicR@mastodon.social avatar

@cstross Just found it on youtube, so that’s tonight’s viewing sorted. Have to keep an eye out for that.
I also had a question about the alternate version of the 10 plagues.

Considering they had a couple of the same actors in different roles, I wouldn’t be surprised if they used the same prop.

To your eye, Betelgeuse is the bright "shoulder" star in Orion. A new simulation shows what it would look like if you could get up close: an enormous, boiling cauldron of gas.

If Betelgeuse were placed where the Sun is, Earth's orbit (blue circle) would be deep inside. That's how big it is!

'Don't Worry About Me' is the first album released by Joey Ramone as a solo artist, released posthumously on this day in 2002, less than a year after his death.

JamesPadraicR,

@historyofpunkrock Good album, though I think Joey would be disappointed with what right-wing nut Bartiromo has turned out to be.
The second ‘solo’ album that came out a few years later was terrible.

How Einstein built on the past to make his breakthroughs

The iconic physicist’s theories of relativity and atomic motions were not so revolutionary, a penetrating history argues.

@gutenberg_org @Nature That Einstein built on ideas from others isn’t new, see David Bodanis’ book E=mc2: A Biography of the World's Most Famous Equation. And it doesn’t tale anything away from his achievement bringing the concepts together into something greater, and seeing the consequences.

Isidor Isaac Rabi, physicist who won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1944 died in 1988.

He eventually took on the problem of determining the nuclear spin and associated magnetic moment of sodium. Throughout the 1930s, Rabi improved the molecular beam method and used it to gather increasingly accurate values for the nuclear spin of atoms, including hydrogen and deuterium. The work culminated in the magnetic resonance method, which is the basis for magnetic resonance imaging.

Thought for the day: Air Fryers are obviously the next instar (larval stage) of the venerable Instant Pot. They seem to have hatched from the 1980s Food Processor and they're on an ontological road to somewhere ... so what do they mature into next? Microwave ovens? Or something new and terrifying?

JamesPadraicR,
@JamesPadraicR@mastodon.social avatar

@cstross Nah, air fryers are an offshoot of convection ovens that evolved with limited resources, so they are small enough to fit on a kitchen counter.
