Calling on nerds! :-) 🚊

Today student groups are visiting our company. One group received funding (75k euro) to investigate how high speed rail can cross non-overhead-electrification gaps on battery.

Their brief states "TGV style train", 300km/hr cruising speed, and 100km battery range.

A very quick thought experiment makes this sound impossible to me (numbers in next post) as the batteries replace passenger capacity. And costs. They disagree.

Am I the idiot here?

Question for #plant #biologists that might be in my network:

Q: I grow batches of #sequoia. About one quarter of seedlings form little water drops on the tips of the first leaves / cotyledons. These stay in place for about two weeks. The rest of the seedlings do not show any of this.

I assume this is some type of guttation. Any I'm loosely theorizing it has to do with how the cotyledons were split, maybe damaged. But frankly, I don't know :-)

Any insight from 🌲 🌱 #science people are welcome!

Ha. Groningen cannot find anyone to build hydrogen trains for them https://www.railwaygazette.com/traction-and-rolling-stock/no-bids-to-supply-hydrogen-trains/65818.article

How about using a battery?
Or better still putting up wires?

Pepijn,
@Pepijn@mastodon.online avatar

@jon They claim an important reason on receiving no bids is that their tender had too many customization requirements in view of the number of trains (and that being not directly related to the hydrogen requirement).

At this point I wonder if we'll just end up with another generation of diesel trains not unlike the ones I used on these lines in the 1980s.

    Yesterday I* saw a badger! 🦡

    When was the last time you saw a wild mammal near your house/garden, and what was it?

    Please mention where you are based.

    (I'm wondering about wild mammals, not house cats/dogs and birds as I assume you all see those regularly).

    *Denmark, house in a woody rural area.

    Edit: boosting this again, it's already been fun reading people's experiences! And not unsurprisingly Australia had the weirdest mammal 🙂

    I do want to keep the domain and host a very simple landing page. Maybe just static HTML on a https connection.

    I want to keep it simple and am willing to pay (a bit :ablobcatrave:). Where do I start?! Help is much appreciated!

    My grandmother passed this year. She is one of the women who taught me how to sew by hand as a child specifically and how to be a self-sufficient craftsperson generally.

    For my 8th birthday she gave me a quilt, like she did all of her grandchildren. I've minimized and thrown everything away to start fresh moving somewhere else several times in my life and it's one of the only things I've managed to keep around. All of my cousins stowed theirs away somewhere, or have them on display in some way or another, but mine has been keeping me warm since I was 8 while I've patched and mended it along.

    This Christmas my mom gave me a pin cushion my grandmother made and she was taken aback that I went straight to using it and sticking pins in it instead of preserving it and displaying it. It's going to be my new main pin cushion.

    Not everyone shares this sentiment, but I think the best way to honor any craftsperson is to use their gifts and creations, and use them well.

    I don't want my grandmother to be a museum piece, carefully handled and sealed away like she left the world: in a distant hospital bed. I want her to be there with me every time I make use of all the knowledge and self-empowerment that she shared, like she lived.

    Pepijn,
    @Pepijn@mastodon.online avatar

    Lovely 🙂

    Our neighbor gifted a beautiful quilt when our baby was born. It came with a note relaying exactly your sentiment:

    "It is meant to be used- snuggled, barfed pooped on - until it bears every sign of love."

    So, ready for a really seriously exciting Fediverse development?

    Flipboard has announced that they have begun to federate, and the first thing they are doing is hosting a whole bunch of wonderful publications using a new Fediverse instance flipboard.com

    Follow these great publications here: https://flipboard.social/@mike/111602961501910219

    Read all about it and their future plans in this Medium post by Flipboard CEO @mike:

    1. And naturally everyone is free to publish what they want. And as a user of I'm fine with the range of serious news-organisations all the way to corporate PR firms.

    The majority do not get a vetted quality seal though.

    With this small subset of verified publishers it is different: to give these a seal for "quality and journalistic integrity", while including a platform that is not that, undermines my trust in the others & flipboards quality seal itself.

    @mike @mastodonmigration

    Pepijn,

    1. I know I can just mute* and move on. And the74 was muted as I know it was founded to create news instead of reporting it. That's nothing to do with bias and all with dishonesty.

    However. What I contemplate is whether to mute the entire flipboard.social domain as I'm afraid with this imo flawed vetting it will be vector for other fake news that I myself don't recognise.

    *"@mike 11. Of course, users have choice and can decide to follow or mute any publisher they’d like."
