Um, starting to see a pattern where people are being followed by accounts whose avatar is an attractive young woman’s face and who post sweet little inspirational messages and cute puppy/cat pix. And they smell synthetic as hell. Saw ’em referred to in a mods conversation as “seeds”. There’s an agenda here, dunno what it is.

PeterLG,
@PeterLG@theblower.au avatar

@timbray

"Seed accounts" will start engaging with you on minor topics (feel good stuff), and then, once you have invested your time into that engagement, they will move on to politics. They are the favoured methods of political bot farms (Russian, Chinese) to sow disinformation.

The ones that switch to sex are at least honest in their motives.

If you've changed something in your life or about yourself, how did you do it, and why?

I stopped trying to be everything to everybody and managed it without becoming nothing to anybody. Much more comfortable.

man i love the contrast between the three social media sites i use. same post:

  1. mastodon. gangbusters. 350 boosts and climbing

  2. cohost. its alright. over 10 shares. not bad for a smaller social media site, really

  3. bluesky. 4 reposts, 10 likes

and this is always how it shakes out. i cant believe that anyone is seriously maining bluesky when it consistently gets an order of magnitude less engagement than i used to get on twitter (before the collapse) and two orders of magnitude less than fedi

i guess i should just stop bothering with bluesky since compared to fedi it is a literal rounding error

I've been very fortunate to find myself in a nice career.

I know many people who haven’t had the same path and the weight of student loans is financially drowning them. I'm truly happy that this will do something to give back to people who put so much in, but can’t break out from underneath the system.

This kind of policy won’t be coming from Republicans. Joe Biden has my vote.

150,000 more student loan borrowers to receive debt relief beginning Wednesday:

PeterLG,
@PeterLG@theblower.au avatar

@floating

That's the part a lot of unthinking people don't get: "Student loans" don't affect students—aka kids going to university—they affect adults trying to exist in a world where everything is just out of reach financially. They hold back families and force intelligent, educated people into work that doesn't match their abilities just to survive. If they didn't have that debt dragging them down, they would be able to achieve so much more.

Most nations have a official national bird, so obviously every country should also have a national ant.

Which ant would you pick for your country?

(If you want to understand my antipathy for butterflies and sometimes honeybees you need only look at this list:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._state_insects

They couldn't even be bothered to pick a UNIQUE insect! And More than half of the insects aren't even native to North America. How basic.)

PeterLG,
@PeterLG@theblower.au avatar

@alcootatooter

I'm going with 𝘔𝘺𝘳𝘮𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘢 𝘨𝘶𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘢. The only ant that makes me wary. There's way too much going on behind those eyes for my liking 😬. Having one inch-long ant watch you as you pass by is unnerving; realising that there are a few others in separate locations doing the same is downright worrying 😰.

Retired old people who aren't just ... busy being sick and dying give back to their communities in HUGE ways. We had someone's grandpa come to our robotics competition to cheer the team on. The old people in my building do all the serious political organizing and man the polls. I'm too busy working being in my 40s and all that.

Raising retirement ages takes away more than just "retirement" ... it makes everything harder.

Far as I'm concerned it should be 59.

PeterLG,

In Australia, it's now 67.5 for men, 65 for women; the plan is to push it to 70 for men soon. It's all about saving on government pension payouts, not the workforce or health, and it shits me up the wall.

Sure, if you WANT to keep working beyond pension age and you're capable, go for it. But forcing people to keep working, especially those not in office work, is criminal.

    STOP THE WORLD'S FIRST OCTOPUS FARM

    A company in Spain has a plan to torture a million octopuses per year – by raising them in crowded tanks and then killing them by putting them in icy water, which causes a slow, stressful death.

    The company knows octopuses are highly intelligent and feel pleasure, pain, joy and fear, but this is their way of turning a huge profit. Now they’re being slammed by scientists and the media – and if enough of us add to the pressure right now we can stop them.

    1/2

    PeterLG,
    @PeterLG@theblower.au avatar

    @anna_lillith

    Absolutely, this project must be halted. Apart from being repugnant from an animal-farming point of view—intense aqua farming is horrible at its best—octopoda are much too intelligent to subject to farming. I find the concept wholly morally disgusting. No, I'm not a vegetarian or vegan.
