‘Morning All, I’m Kelli. A reclamation coach, author, celebrant, and retired structural engineer, owned by two cats. When Ollie and Remi aren’t bossing me around, I enjoy reading fiction, playing with fountain pens, and non-rush hour driving.

(In reality, despite the moniker, I herd no animals. Cats don't volunteer for such foolishness.)

What is your first experience with the Internet? How old were you? What did you look at?

Shepherdess,

@RickiTarr August 1993, I had just tuned 18.
It was a blue screen bulletin board.
30 years ago is way too long for me to remember content.

Based on your religion & culture and how you grew up were you taught that if you had a “gift” (that is if you were good at art or science or dance or something) you have a responsibility to cultivate that gift and make things that help your community. That is do you feel that having talent means you MUST to work hard to give back? And this isn’t just a nice idea— it’s the difference between heaven and hell. Between honor and shame.

Shepherdess,

@futurebird you didn’t have to have a “gift” for the expectation responsibility that implies there’s no way to actually meet it. You just had to be female.

A Hindsight Question!

What is something you loved or enjoyed when you were younger, that isn't so great now that you're older?

Shepherdess,

@RickiTarr I hate to say it but the sexism of The West Wing hasn’t aged well.

In the 90s when I was a teen I tried an expensive, heavily branded as "eco friendly" rubber menstrual cup and didn't have a great time. Ended up using disposable products. Most people don't re-think this choice once they have something that "works"

The "cup landscape" has changed: Silicone cups are amazing. Easy to clean, more shapes and designs. And they are CHEAP.

The old crunchy brands are trying up upsell with extra packaging and little cloth bags. Ignore them. 1/

Shepherdess,

@futurebird I prefer disks over cups for ease of use. But, with period underwear they’re fabulous.

Coffee sucks the same way alcohol sucks. Very few people like it straight. Most people add other flavors to make it more palatable.

♥️♥️♥️Shoutout to the staff of the hotel I stayed at for expertly de-escalating a Karen situation!

♥️♥️♥️And shoutout to the white hotel guests that stuck around to make sure that hotel security heard exactly what she was trying to do. My favorite comment: "Wow! A Karen situation in real life! I've only ever seen these online! This is surreal! What is she thinking?"

End result, yours truly did not get kicked out of the hotel for no reason, and feels slightly better about the state of the world.

Shepherdess,

@mekkaokereke oof, that situation sucks green fuzzy rocks and I’m glad that you weren’t harmed further and folks had your back.

I'm really mad at several college professors in the CS department at my undergrad who told us all "self driving cars are coming" and trusting them as authorities I quashed my many qualms and wasted a lot of time in otherwise important conversations about urban planning insisting that we account for the impact of this 'inevitable' variable.

"They will be safer than human drivers." tapped into my confirmation bias ... I hate drivers, after all. Of course every one could be bested by a machine. 1/

If we pretend that the only options are:

  1. Chronological feed
  2. Algorithmic feed where a company chooses the algorithm and objective function

And we pretend that "Share of time is a perfect metric for happiness," then this might make sense.

But... time spent isn't a perfect metric for happiness, and there is another option: 3) Algorithmic feed where the user has more control of the algorithm and objective function.

Eg, chronological is an algorithmic feed!🙂🙃

OMG I made it downstairs again.

My orthopedic surgeon last week suggested I should wait another two weeks but my mental health was on a downward spiral and I knew last night that I couldn't stay in that bedroom any longer.

My ADHD brain couldn't handle it. The same walls, doing the same things over and over. It was too much. I broke down to my girlfriend last night sobbing.

So I came downstairs today and I feel a ton better.

Shepherdess,

@Mrfunkedude never had a knee replacement and being traumatized by medical procedures is totally a thing. You may not have been awake for the ordeal, but your body was and it remembers.

Be as gentle as possible with it. And, even if it feels weird acknowledging the pain, fear, confusion out loud even if you can’t pinpoint the cause can be helpful.

Hello people, what do you do to ensure that your notes will be properly processed and isn't just stuff to occupy your folders? Meaning, how do you ensure that you extract value from them?

A question I am pondering as I have hundreds of notes now, and while I have made sure to turn some of them into articles, am not sure about everything else. Am curious to know how you extract value from your notes.

Shepherdess,

@liztai yep, it’s not a tool for everyone. I’m glad you know what works for you.

Product managers, do you know how you get to 100 million users in 5 days for your MVP product?

By cutting features and only doing the barest minimum but make those features excellent.

Shepherdess,

@georgeeyong @mekkaokereke @oscarjiminy @carnage4life theres also the Stacy Abrams driven documentary All In: The Fight for Democracy that details the BS in the Georgia governor’s election in 2018.

In addition to the stuff mentioned in this thread, there’s also closing of rural pools in predominantly black counties to make it more difficult for those folks to vote.

@penfount for me, fountain pens are a specialized tool that I use for work.

Sharing in case this helps someone.

The last time someone in our household got Covid, we were able to keep it from spreading to anyone else. ♥️🙏🏿 This time we were not so lucky. My Covid high score streak is finally broken! Rona got me y'all!

Completely unscientific observations of how this thing looks to have beat our mitigations:

Day 0: Contagious. No symptoms. Negative tests.

Day 1: Contagious. Slight symptoms. Negative test.

Day 2: Contagious. More severe symptoms. Positive tests.

Shepherdess,

@cowman @mekkaokereke the false negative rates in these tests have always been outside of a range I found to be accurate enough to have any kind of meaning.

Commentators have noted that the thousands of migrants who perish on the ocean each year don't get nearly the amount of media coverage as the Titanic submarine.

CNN analysis: "News outlets go all in on missing Titanic submersible. But have they gone overboard in coverage?"
