    Let me get this straight: teachers can only write off $300 in out-of-pocket expenses for school supplies, but “three-martini” business lunches are fully tax deductible for corporations. Hello?

    @rbreich both should have the high thresholds. Go to your town meetings and demand they raise the school budgets which they kept lowering since 2001. Then get out and vote in the local elections. Sometimes those local efforts do more direct good than the national ones.

    It just amazes me that people keep expecting me to fly all over the place for conferences and seminar lectures. I've gotten uninvited to 2 conferences in the last couple weeks by politely asking if I could give the invited talk remotely instead. This is dumb, we need to change.

    @sundogplanets that's how it used to be! Enjoy the traveling, enjoy the adventure. We got so many indistries in so many towns that died outand became wastelands since online took over. I for one would like to see these hotels come back to life and give us our third spaces back.

    @Strandjunker the whole system is broken, like i get it and all, but biden really isn't much better. We haven't had a good year, or even one we could pretend was good since 2000. What they should be wondering is why america hasn't moved on from 9/11 yet. Incels do scarier terrorism all the time and covid killed a 9/11 worth of people every day. Sooooo what's REALLY so special about 9/11 that they can't let go and build tomorrow instead?

    Just a little notice for pro-gun US politicians!

    Here in Europe we play the same games, watch the same movies and read the same books and browse the same internet but we do not have daily mass shootings

    "Daily deaths by gun" is not something normal and should not be accepted

    @stux i blame 9/11 and the way this country fell apart afterwards leaving those of us who were young without a past and the boomers who were our parents refusing to relinquish control for a future. We've had terrorism and large avoidable death tolls on us soil since then, but the 9/11 wounds never healed. Is it really so bad to be nostalgic and yearn for a time before 9/11 with what we learned taken with us? America: DOA since sept. 11 2001. Thanks a lot, Bush.

    @pluralistic this sucks. It was super cool a few years ago when i tried it out. Luckily, i guess, i never made anything with it. That "free under whatever" concept is what made it something people cared about because it was accessible. Any chance we'll see someone pick the bones and make an open source version when the dust settles?

    I want to address something I've been thinking about recently. As far as Religion, Afterlife, ect, I'm solidly in the "I don't know" camp, and I'm fine with that. I think any Religion, Religious Institution, or Religious Leader who has used spiritual beliefs to oppress, control, manipulate, or financially gain from other people should be both questioned and mocked, and I have no problem doing it, or with other people doing it.

    The issue I run into on Mastodon is Aggressive Atheism. I have no issue with atheism at all, but I do have a problem if it's used to attack other people for their personal spiritual beliefs. If someone is making a comment about something they believe personally, and they aren't hurting anyone with it, jumping into the comments to say "PROVE GOD IS REAL" is just as annoying and pointless as a couple Religious people knocking on your door, and telling you, you must accept their Lord. This is simply a matter of respecting other people.

    @CelloMomOnCars less people driving and the people who do drive are driving classic cars. That's the only future that makes sense in the face of global warming and ending the mass-production hyper-consumerism that comorbidly exists with it. Modern cars are just as much of a problem because they're disposable, mostly plastic, and use up silicon. Classics are meant to be fixed and maintained and parts refreshed; they can last a long time and a lot of the work can be done by the owner.

    @CelloMomOnCars the apartments which are closest to the centers of commerce, such as the ones above stores and things like that should expressly be for the disabled so they needn't have far to go, or wait long for delivery. But where cars can't go, neither can construction equipment or 52" flat screen TVs or queen size beds. There is a bigger conversation about the negative impact of mass-commoditization and homogeneity of lifestyles to be had parallel to this.

    @AbandonedAmerica genuinely wish people would understand the "houses" on HGTV they make into gray hellscapes are in a studio, and its cost cutting to make the viewer imagine whatever they want there because they didn't realize they were trendsetters before they cheaped out.
