@nivrig it would be nice if these posts came with a guy wearing sunglasses replying with information on how to do the pirating. The sentiment is great and all but where is the affirmative action?

I wonder if the “Right to Repair” laws will extend to software. At some point, software gets abandoned, and maybe codebases should be made OSS after a certain period.

This will become more critical as vehicles are more integrated with software and services that will one day shut down.

SnepperStepper,
@SnepperStepper@mastodon.social avatar

@khalidabuhakmeh amazing how the actual problem of vehicles running software and how absolutely fucking braindead that shit is goes right over all your heads.

@dgar the future is sad and nobody knows what to do or why they're doing it. The utopia was a failure and life went on, was it worth it? There has been a lot of talk about the problems with so-called "AI" but one I don't feel gets enough attention is that "AI" products are surveillance products. "AI" is inevitably run in a cloud service, and in order for the AI to know what to generate some amount of the context within your application— usually it's not clear to the user what context, or how much— has to get sent to the cloud. The more of my local app state that gets transmitted over the Internet, the less comfortable I am.

SnepperStepper,
@SnepperStepper@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc this is why, despite all the theoretical possibilities for limitless potential that modern systems have to offer, i only put in effort on old computer systems and software and keep my modern hardware and use to an absolute bare minimum.

mcnees, to random

Edwin Hubble announced in 1925 that Andromeda and other spiral nebulae were in fact separate galaxies outside the Milky Way, in a paper read to an AAS meeting by H.N. Russell.

The Universe was far larger than what many astronomers had allowed themselves to imagine. It was more than just our little island of stars.

Hubble built on observations by Vesto Slipher, collaborated with Milton Humason, and relied on Henrietta Swan Leavitt’s Cepheid variable work to reach this conclusion.

SnepperStepper,
@SnepperStepper@mastodon.social avatar

@mcnees everything is just dust in the wind and meaningless outside of our stupid little traditions and celebrations to break up the otherwise bleak monotony of existence. Life is pointless and we all die eventually. Everything you know and love will come to and end and be forgotten. But hey, there's dark matter somewhere that might be interesting. Thanks for this reminder!

HEY LOOK, PORN ON BETA. How about that?

SnepperStepper,
@SnepperStepper@mastodon.social avatar

@foone it was actually the football game length on VHS's EP/SLP mode, wasn't it? I've never heard the porn thing.

But also i don't condone the format wars. In the words of a canine-rating legend; they're all good formats, brent. They're all unique and have interesting attributes and its worth getting involved with and using all of them.

@Daojoan @parismarx why does the fact teslas & EVs in general are huge terrorism targets not get mentioned much? They burst into flames even on their own and fire depts have a difficult time dealing with so when they get put in parking garages, large amounts of infrastructure damage can occur from their flames. They're practically ticking explosions that are just waiting to happen on the roads and highways.

I discovered a fun way to break chrome today!

<a href="http://foobar.egg/blah">somelink</a>

Set up foobar.egg so that it has both HTTP and HTTPS set up, but they lead to different places or HTTPS returns a 404/403.

SnepperStepper,
@SnepperStepper@mastodon.social avatar

@foone i'd love to see a browser developed that mimics the old versions, that can run on a modern computer or an old computer the same. I'd think you might have to tune out things like shopify and things that rely on chrome but like, no big loss let's be real. Websites developed old skool are really the only ones worth visiting.

SnepperStepper,

@foone is that gonna run on my windows 98 setup?

nixCraft, (edited ) to FreeBSD

"240 million PCs could end up in landfills when Windows 10 support ends"

Sure.

Or they could be repurposed with #Linux or Chrome OS Flex, or #FreeBSD, and we can stop being so freaking dramatic.

If you just browse, watch Netflix, shop, net banking, etc, Linux distributions like Mint or Ubuntu could save you money. It is an environment-friendly option.

SnepperStepper,
@SnepperStepper@mastodon.social avatar

@nixCraft also, if windows 10 wasn't such a trash operating system on lame hardware most of those would be skimmed by hardware enthusiasts and loved again like the pre-7 systems. So really who's fault is all this ewaste but a company who no longer provides a good or service anybody wants to buy and instead hangs on as a corporate leach with a dying niche.

"Could AI lead to a four-day workweek?"

Sure! Just get everyone to start posting on the web that there are only four days in a week, then the AI will believe it to be true. Once the AI believes it's true, everyone else will too.

SnepperStepper,
@SnepperStepper@mastodon.social avatar

Mountain Dew has a new marketing program, called MTN DEW RAID which will scan Twitch streams with the tag, searching for Mountain Dew products and logos visible.

If the streamer is part of the RAID program then they'll be rewarded, otherwise it'll send a chat to the streamer asking if they want to participate.

This is a great example of the kinds of capabilities that will now be widespread as AI is commoditized .

COOL! The spicy article I wrote about satellite pollution is FINALLY published! "Bright satellites are disrupting astronomy research worldwide" in Nature News & Views.

This article required weeks of back-and-forth with the editor, the editor-in-chief, and Nature's lawyers, so I hope that means it's a good one.

During this process, I learned that satellite companies are so powerful and litigious that even giant publishers like Nature are terrified of getting sued. Which is...rather worrying.
