Good morning fellow Mastos and hello to Monday. A new week begins. Have a great day, if such a thing is permitted by Mondays!

Today's random photo is an Egyptian Sphinx, stolen from Egypt by Diocletian, a Roman emperor. It's now located in his palace in Split. The Sphinx differs from the well known one in that it has human hands as opposed to lion paws.

Shame my phone camera's exposure was wrong, but the Sphinx is made of black stone. There are 4 of these around the palace. 1 is broken though.

Asian hornets overwintered in UK for first time, DNA testing shows

@Wen @fkamiah17 the problem with the term is that it does not sound bad (it is bad, very bad).

What was needed was a way to note the catastrophic changes to weather patterns.

Alright, lots of heavy discussions today, so let's talk about something silly!

What is a movie that always makes you laugh?

Personal pick:

Anything Mel Brooks, but Robin Hood: Men in Tights, it's just funny every time I watch it.

Decisions decisions.

Tomorrow is a rough anniversary (both of mum passing and of hers and dads wedding anniversary) so I like to get out.

But I have options. UK Games xpo in brum, which pre covid and his passing was where we used to hide.

Or just take myself off for a day out somewhere like York.

Decisions decisions.

How much alone time vs socializing do you need?

For me there are a few people who are usually equalizing, and I can just be around them, so I won't count that. But generally, I find about 3 times a week, I'm game for socializing. A day in between to rest is usually nice, but the larger the gathering or if we go somewhere particularly noisy or I'm meeting new people that involves more effort, and my social battery empties sooner. I'm very curious where everyone else falls on this!

Thebratdragon,
@Thebratdragon@mastodon.scot avatar

@dan613 @AnhedoniaIsReal @RickiTarr I am not lonely, I talk to strange people on social media, my cats, my stuffies, the birds, squirrels and hedgepigs in the garden....

Hive mind, it is sunday, so I am allowed a takeaway (only do it one day a week so I do not have to cook every day living alone).

Do I fancy a fish supper, a pizza or a nice chinese?

@RickiTarr@beige.party avatar

I used to babysit a lot, and I was kind of famous for getting kids to try foods they normally wouldn't. I was never pushy about it, just included them in the shopping/harvesting/cooking process, and asked them to try a little bite of everything, and to remember that your tastebuds change as you age, so keep on trying stuff.

This backfired on me occasionally though. Once as an adventure, we went to a Japanese restaurant, and I ordered the kiddos some Katsu (who doesn't love something fried with dippy sauce), and got myself a plate of sushi rolls and sashimi. Well, since I always asked them to try one bite of something new, they looked at me expectantly, so I let them try a bit of each. Turns out they were all in for sushi, and those little nerds ate most of my plate, and then they always wanted to go. Kids, I don't have sushi money every day!

Thebratdragon,
@Thebratdragon@mastodon.scot avatar

@kelvin0mql @RickiTarr my first experience with sushi was 1985'ish. Employer funded office lunch at a very posh place back of covent garden. I was 18/19.

Group of slightly rowdy blokes knowing what they wanted (despite not having a clue).

Me I politely the asked japanese server what he recommended as I had no clue. Rest of the table got what they asked for, I kept getting taster plates of all kinds of things, and a topped up saki jug.

Fave was the saki marinated salmon....

The most ridiculous thing about cop procedural shows is when they ask where a person was, and what they were doing at a specific time the person always has perfect and immediate recall. I'd be desperately trying to remember what day of the week that was, and trying to open my phone calendar. If I was the cop, I'd immediately be suspicious of the person who remembered exactly where they were and what they were doing.

Thebratdragon,
@Thebratdragon@mastodon.scot avatar

@Sophie @RickiTarr he also noted, that by the time the Police want an alibi from you, they already know the answer, unlike tv shows, alibis and motive are very low on their list of ways to track the criminal, He always phrased it as, they are the CPS problem, we just find out who was their and how, why, only comes into play in special cases, mostly when trying to catch someone before they do it again, rather like MO.

Thebratdragon,
@Thebratdragon@mastodon.scot avatar

@sennoma @RickiTarr the, sometimes the perp tries to insinuate themselves into theinvestigation, is not actually a TV trope. It really happens, especially if they think they were clever and not getting the attention they are after.

This is one (of many) reasons polis are so guarded with information.

Thebratdragon,
@Thebratdragon@mastodon.scot avatar

@Sophie @RickiTarr I knew a detective whose rule of thumb was suspect the person who could instantly recall where they were at a given moment, rather than the vague, ummm errr, I might have been doing x type answer.

On apartheid Israel

When apartheid South Africa came under growing international pressure at the UN, the General Assembly initiated boycotts.

It suspended South Africa, stripping it of its Member State rights & privileges.

The apartheid regime "could no longer be seated, speak or vote at the General Assembly & other UN organs.

"Apartheid South Africa changed course because it became a pariah & isolated regime"

Britain's record on homelessness is world beating, just not in a good way.

We've the highest recorded levels of homelessness in the developed world; while other counties have seen (albeit slow) declines in homelessness, since 2010 the UK's rate has been accelerating away.

The housing crisis has many dimensions, but here there's a direct correlation between the arrival of the current Tory govt. & massive increases!

The party of landlords is working for them & doing nothing for us!

Chart: Britain has by far the highest rate of homelessness in the developed world. Rate of homelessness per 10,000 people (2023 or latest). UK - 52/10,000 Belgium & France (next ranked) 32/10,00 then all over states listed (in descending order), below 30/10,000: Czechia (27), Germany (26), USA (19), NZ (13), Australia (12), Canada (10), Portugal (10), Denmark (6), Poland (5), Sweden (5), Spain (5), Norway (3), Finland (1)

@CelloMomOnCars the objection to heat pumps is simple, if we can heat our houses without gas, we can stop using fossil fuels for homes, and with solar/wind etc replacing gas fired power stations how do the fossil fuel industry reclaim all that invested money in bringing gas to your homes?
