Okay, I am sorry to quote myself but this a topic I've picked over and embodied for years, both personally and professionally.

When I shot off a bird thread about it in the grocery store parking lot in October of 2021, it resonated with a lot of people so I'm going to reproduce my words here, where there may be a different or more nuanced discussion about it.

Here goes: getting older does not make people conservative, that's a myth made by conservatives. (1/5)

I've been seeing discussions lately around the YouTube fascism algorithm [not directed at me] implying that if you get those suggestions it's because that's material you have sought out.
Not true.

It's been studied and repeatedly shown--like a vehicle w/poor alignment--suggestions will drift to the right pretty quickly.
To "never" get them, you must
a) be outside targeted demographics AND
b) not look at DIY, repair, survivalism, building, cooking, sewing, politics, animal husbandry, automotive

Reiterating this important point:

These were so-called "financial insecurity" voters.

They could afford to take off work for this trip. Could afford travel costs, lodging, dining, and drinks. Could afford specially printed T-shirts and flags. Could afford cameras, military cosplay accessories, weapons, and ammunition.

Their votes were not about financial insecurity to begin with.

Seeing this come up again, so: "Immunity debt" is a myth.

Getting Covid damages the immune system (similar to measles virus and HIV virus.)

The more times you have Covid, the more damaged your immune system. We don't know yet how much it can be healed.

Just saw the beginning of a video complaining that people in 2023 dress sloppily compared to past decades, and...listen.

We went through a pandemic that is STILL killing us, we're paying 40% of our paychecks for rent, mass shootings every week, Nazis in the streets, book burnings. We are exhausted, we are ill, we are depressed and anxious, we are working, we are trying to hang onto our sanity and feed our kids.

And you're mad someone is wearing stretch pants to the store. PuhLEEZE!

It's not that everyone I know who's had Covid has had some subsequent dreadful health issue, it's that everyone I know with some (new) dreadful health issue seems to have gotten it as a result of having Covid.

My son wants me to post this, he would like to get help for his BFFs (twins from his HS). They just need some food and household items for their family.
Their dad lost his job and the twins have been working every week to try to supplement mom's pay but they are short on basics like food and soap. (There are younger sibs too.)

They are such nice kiddos, and trying to support their family as teens!

I did grocery pickup. My regular picker came out looking overwhelmed. The store was crowded like a disaster was coming, he said, and they were out of everything, even staples like milk and cereal.

Looked in on Bluesky and there's a thread where people who didn't stay here are talking about why they didn't stay here. And not the racism reasons, either! It's all "nobody's posting" and "there are no conversations" and "nothing's happening."

Like, what. Where ARE they, exactly? Did they lock themselves in a closet?

It's a freakin' content firehose here, and I can't make a comment without like ten replies! And it's been like that since the first week.

So here's the thing. I like animals including, of course, dogs. (I don't have any because I live in an apartment and I'm allergic to most mammals.)

But when I'm running/hiking at the county park. Where leashes are REQUIRED on the trails. And dogs I don't know come running up to me.

The reason I look unhappy at the owners is not because I dislike dogs. It is not because I have an irrational "fear" of dogs. It's because I don't like complete strangers running up to me out in the woods. 😠

I don't know what to do about all the fcking horror everywhere but I got out my overburdened credit card and ordered some cough syrup and soup packets and microwave mac n cheese sent to an elderly man living in a motel who is alone and sick, and begging on social media for help. God what else can we do but help someone else.
