William Anders, astronaut on the Apollo 8 mission, passed away earlier today.

Anders took the iconic Earthrise photo while orbiting the Moon with Borman and Lovell. No human had ever seen an Earthrise before.

On the transmission he says "Oh my God, look at that picture over there! It's the Earth coming up. Wow, is that pretty!"

I recently jumpstarted a new sidehobby: A newsletter/blog exploring Bellingham via transit. BhamByBus is still very much a work in progress and I'm experimenting with content approaches and need to apply a custom URL, but it's taking shape on the Ghost platform.

Here's an exploration of transit-oriented tamales in Bellingham: https://bellingham-by-bus-and-train.ghost.io/bellingham-tamales-new-mexico-frelard-suenito/

So, the Bellville ferry terminal in #VictoriaBC is being upgraded to have US CBP preclearance for the Coho (to Port Angeles) and the Clipper (to Seattle) but what would be awesome would be a passenger ferry to #BellinghamWa's Fairhaven terminal, which is right next to the #AmtrakCascades train station. Especially if it had code share and checked baggage going straight between the ferry and the train.

Ignoring expert consensus, feeling no shame following exposés showing tech lobbyists shaping these EU surveillance proposals, EU politicians are at it again

So, we'll reiterate: Signal would rather leave the EU market than subject our users to mass gov surveillance. FULL STOP

So, super fancy, exclusive restaurant catering to wealthy diners rips off its customers, harasses and steals from its employees, then washes its hands by gifting real estate to a proselytizing Christian organization that provides housing and meals to people who have been pushed down, abused, and displaced by the kinds of people who endure a waitlist of up to year, jet to a dining destination, and pay $500 for dinner. Can’t help but think this illustrates the capitalism circle of life.

The Willows Inn, a super fancy, fine-dining, farm-to-table, restaurant on a remote island near Bellingham, WA, that the New York Times in 2011 labeled "one of 10 Restaurants Worth a Plane Ride,” had a precipitous fall from grace in 2022. Now, the property is selling, and the proceeds will benefit Lighthouse Mission Ministries, a shelter for the unhoused.

In its heyday, as it topped the culinary world's best restaurant lists, fraud and abuse festered behind the scenes.

Employees alleged a nightmare environment of sexual harassment, bullying, misogyny, and racism.

The Willows Inn paid $1.37 million to settle a class-action lawsuit for wage theft.

Turns out, the restaurant's "farm-to-table" claims also fell short. Some of the supposed locally sourced and foraged food actually came from random grocery stores and even Costco. At $500 a plate, that’s not what you bargained for.

To make amends, the former owners, Tim and Marcia McEvoy, donated the property to Bellingham’s Lighthouse Mission, a Christian organization that provides shelter and services to the unhoused (and only hires Christians). The property, reportedly worth about $2.4 million, has accepted an offer and is expected to change hands soon.

🆕 blog! “Gell-Mann Amnesia and Purdah”

This is a retropost. Written contemporaneously, but published long after the events. At the time, I was a Civil Servant in Cabinet Office. Now I am not. But as we're heading for another General Election, I thought I'd share this post. It's the evening of the 2019 General Election. I am plagued by two thoughts. […]

This morning Ireland officially recognised Palestine as an independent state. Our history of struggle and oppression has taught us the value of freedom and justice, and we always stand unwaveringly with the oppressed. I’m very proud to be Irish today

Israel’s military is tipping off far-right settler terrorists to the location of aid trucks delivering vital supplies to Gaza to block delivery.

This. Is. A. War. Crime.

Israel is claiming “Hamas” is diverting aid. That is a claim all relief agencies reject. US officials also state Israel has offered no evidence to support allegations that Hamas is diverting aid.

Imagine being more upset at ICC for prosecuting this than at the famine its enabling: https://t.co/t9umHxFsUQ

Too funny. Can’t make this up.

Currently if King County WA needs to produce an evacuation map they only do so as a PDF. County emergency management (EM) staff says it would be very expensive to have county GIS staff produce an interactive evacuation map.

I volunteered to write data conversion code (geojson > kmz) so King County WA could use Google maps as an interactive evacuation map.

EM staff says policy prohibits them from using outside help that is not officially approved. So I contacted county procurement asking how I can get approved as a volunteer consultant. See pic for their reply.

So…there is a concerted campaign, with Musk as its mouthpiece, to discredit Signal and get people to switch to Telegram. It’s disinformation, but there’s also useful information in it. The useful information is that a hideous, powerful, right-wing crank — or whoever’s yanking his chain — really, really wants people to use Telegram.

We’ve long known Telegram’s security is weak. But now, in light of this new information, we should move forward assuming that Telegram is actively compromised.

Really love this perspective on "slop." https://simonwillison.net/2024/May/8/slop/ Slop is AI-generated content that you might see on social media, when searching online, etc, without asking for it. As @simon says, "Personal AI ethics remains a complicated set of decisions. I think don’t publish slop is a useful baseline."
