Reactionary messaging is based entirely on a series of tropes:
-Ungrateful youth
-Nasty woman
-Scary minority
-Evil degenerate
-Uppity intellectual

Ideally the tropes can be combined.

This is why they are so obsessed with lying about college Gaza protests, it allows the right to push dirty hippie, scary minority, and ungrateful youth all at once on an issue that has little public traction (foreign policy).

Most ppl don't care about the policy either way, so the tropes are what they see.

Sorting out getting replacement certificates for my degrees after the originals were lost in the great document loss of 2023 and one university (Charles Sturt) just lets me get a new one; the other (U of Sydney) requires me to fill out a statutory declaration explaining what happened to the original which must be witnessed by a Justice of the Peace. WHAT.

The important thing about finding beauty in ruins isn't showing off where you've been or what a daredevil you are. It's not about being cool, to me at least.

It's the tacit acknowledgement that "functional" isn't the only normal state, that normalcy is in fact itself an illusion. Places are scarred by what they endure. So are people.

They are still worthy of love. Forgotten, silent, unacknowledged though they may be. Even with the scars, perhaps because of them. We still deserve understanding

bradpatrick,
@bradpatrick@esq.social avatar

@AbandonedAmerica As an amateur genealogist, one of the lessons you learn is how rich and amazing the lives of our forebears were. We are alive for such a short time. Even the things we build don’t last forever, but you are exactly right - they are worthy of new love, beyond the love they enjoyed during the flash of a moment they were in use. Your work is awesome.

One, the judges in the case very clearly were not buying it, and it doesn't seem likely that the US Supreme Court would either.

Two, let's be clear that if this argument did pass judicial review and Trump did become president, he would absolutely 100% start murdering people. He wouldn't even blink.

@scalzi If this theory were to be approved by SCOTUS, the Rule of Law and America as we know it would no longer exist. If "No man is above the law" is no longer true, we need to have a new Revolution and install a government for which it is.

SCOTUS already granted Jack Smith's petition to expedite the consideration of a writ of certiorari before judgment.

This was lightning fast.

Any hope Trump had that his immunity claim would slow things down is now dashed.

Also, Trump knows how to read tea leaves: SCOTUS immediately giving Jack Smith what he wants is not a good sign for Trump.

I think for fun I'll go see what Trump has to say about all of this.

bradpatrick,

@Teri_Kanefield In a perfect world, SCOTUS would issue a PCA (per curium affirmed) 12/21 without writing a full opinion. “No man is above the law.” USDC Affirmed.

Why are so many American pedestrians being killed by car-drivers at night?

Fascinating piece in the New York Times (free link here: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2023/12/11/upshot/nighttime-deaths.html?unlocked_article_code=1.FE0.uEMf.FuV3jZhYzZHu&hpgrp=k-abar&smid=url-share) on this question

After years of decline, the number of pedestrians killed by drivers began to rise in 2008 -- but only at night

No-one's quite sure why

Embiggified vehicles don't seem to be the cause ...

... though distracted driving does seem to be part of it

Also: more people living alongside massive highway-esque suburban roads

bradpatrick,
@bradpatrick@esq.social avatar

@clive I would imagine smartphones and distracted driving are the biggest contributor.

Geekcommerce v. - New complaint alleges, inter alia, infringement of this design patent for a "valve stem cap."

On the one hand, kudos to SRIPLAW for publicly filing some claim charts.

On the other hand, the claim charts show that the accused products are different enough not to infringe.

I have been keeping a journal since my mom died that is just for grief. It's been two years and I read back through the earlier entries, the ones I could stomach, and I see my pain in the deepest part of myself is still very much the same today. I know in time it gets easier to process but rereading that helped me realize I am being way too hard on myself with expectations of normalcy or an ease in my depression. And then I remembered my dad died too. And I realized...

Someone asked me what I think is going on with Trump's lawyers attacking the clerk.

Yesterday I said this:

"It's hard to tell what is going on with that. My best guess is that Trump's lawyers are fatigued, know they are losing, and are getting weird and paranoid."

Judge Engoron, who sees it all up close, said there is misogyny.

I just saw a picture of the clerk and I have revised my opinion.

The judge may be right . . .
