Hi guys! I think I’m over Joplin. Don’t get me wrong, it’s simple, it works, but… why is it Postgres db…. I have the server on a small box with like 250 GB of space and backing it up with kopia to Backblaze with free 10 GB, so I’m a bit storage cautious....
@darth
There is in system settings a section called online accounts.
In Gnome this functionality is coded by Gnome devs and it works.
In KDE this functionality is delegated to an obscure badly maintained third party piece of code. It hasn't worked for years.
If you make your way to the KDE bugzilla you find KDE devs berating you for not having the fixed version of this obscure library, instead of just fucking fixing it.

This is a show stopper for me on any of the big name 'encrypted' platforms, Proton, Tuta et al - impossible to import/export data. Moving from one silo'ed walled garden to another arguably worse one is anathema.
The thing that sucks the least for me is to pay to host my own email/contacts/calendar/storage via open source apps in a privacy friendly jurisdiction e.g. Hetzner
NEWS: SCOTUS will not immediately hear the case over Trump’s immunity claim in connection with the Jan. 6-related federal charges he faces in DC. The DC Circuit, however, has already expedited the appeal to be heard there in early January.
The courtyard of Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza turned into a mass graves after the Israeli occupation forces killed hundreds of Palestinians and prevented the transportation of their bodies to bury them.
This could be a controversial opinion, but I think we should pay for tools like #Evernote. I would happily pay for #Obsidian if it's a payment per download thing like the old days, but I definitely do not want to pay a subscription fee*.
I mean for the software, tho I understand why the sync functionality needs to be a subscription.
@liztai
Absolutely agree Elizabeth. I long ago hit the wall of subscription fatigue. I look for apps that allow me to make use of my existing cloud/local storage for syncing. I feel more comfortable knowing where my data is and In all cases I find apps that include syncing to proprietary storage to be extortionately priced.
Ubuntu is great
Arch is fun for tinkering
Fedora is good for workstations
Mint is good for newbies
Manjaro
Pop!_OS has a cool interface
EndeavourOS is interesting for easy Arch installs
Historically, Arch devs have always been hostile to anything remotely user friendly even to the point of knowingly breaking the distro (more than once) and leaving users to figure out a solution. Historically Arch forums have been characterized by a sneering eliteist RTFM culture.
Of course any derivative which seeks to ease installation, maintenance & general usage is utterly repellant to these folks.
It may come as a surprise but not everyone values being autistically knowledgeable of the deepest, most intricate workings of [insert name of personal computer operating system].
An acquaintance of mine had several loved ones arrive yesterday as part of this group. Warmest welcome to everyone who has made it out of Israel so far, and best wishes and safest travels to those still being subjected to this deplorable culmination of decades of oppression at the state of Israel’s hand 🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸
Guys I truly don’t mean to spam the community but these are legit questions. Yesterday I posted about linux compatibility and computers and every single person gave me knowledge to use and you’re all awesome....
Ubuntu 23.10 & Fedora 39, both running Gnome of all things (eye roll) run just fine on my late 2009 iMac (iMac 10,1)
nb : Fedora 39 has an installation bug. Installing Fedora 38 minimal then upgrading to 39 is the simplest solution. Kudos as usual to Canonical for shipping a trouble free install on Mac.
@theconversationau Thanks to Michael Most for this critique of the orthodoxy. We need fresh MP's in our parliaments who are not blinded by #neoliberal ideology
@linuxmint The Xfce release is an object lesson to other distro's on how to do it right. I'm greatly impressed by the low ram usage, sparkling performance and exceptional polish.
I'm really starting to warm to steady incremental improvements.
#auspol APH could do a much much better job of getting people involved in public discourse. A cheap idea:
Livestreams of the chambers on YouTube via ABC. Parlview sucks and feels an age older than is comfortable, this would be cheap as infrastructure wise and would allow people to see what Parliament is doing each day.
@omglinux I notice a steady stream of distro's rebasing off of Debian now. The decision to offer decent firmware support as part of the install was obviously popular.
Joplin alternative needed

Started to move off Google (not strictly self-hosted)
Started to move off Google’s services to proton:...
Are older, but Linux compatible computers capable of running the newest kernel/version of various distros?
