I may revisit this story again soon, but just a reminder that allowing websites to send you notifications is a risky proposition. There seems to be a metric truckload of bad stuff being distributed this way (much of it ad fraud).

Anything that intentionally confuses that push notification approval request w/ some type of CAPTCHA is downright malicious.

https://krebsonsecurity.com/2020/11/be-very-sparing-in-allowing-site-notifications/

Fortunately, you can just turn off these requests altogether:

WHAT—

This had me in three words: "network-connected wrenches". I mean, WHY? Okay, I get that if you're Boeing you might want to ensure your fitters are torquing the bolts on your emergency exit covers correctly. But surely the wrench should be pretty much transmit-only while it's in use on an assembly line? It shouldn't be able to execute code at all.

Many libraries remain unpatched.

Have to say this... "lay" has a different meaning from "lie". You don't "lay around" on the sofa, you "lie around".

"Lay" is transitive, ie it is connected to an object. So you lay a coat on a chair, or you lay a towel on the sand. Then you lie on it.

This has been a public service broadcast from Vocab Pedants United. :)

Hi everyone,

If you download one copyrighted file, that’s piracy and you can go to jail (I remember the ads, on the DVDs I actually bought with money).

If you download a billion of them it’s training data and your start-up is worth billions of dollars.

EDIT: thanks everyone, I'm not looking anymore. :)

Hi everyone 👋 I'm available for hire for a full remote position!

I'm a webdeveloper with 15 years of experience (Ruby on Rails, Go, client side Javascript, Linux), I'm used to build features from brainstorming to release - back, front and infra. You can see my LinkedIn profile in my bio for details on my career.

I'm open to various kind of work:

  • As an employee for a position in France.

  • As a freelancer for anywhere in the world. I bill 300€ per full day, but it needs to be at most a 6 months mission (or half time all year round) : my business structure limits me to 36k€ revenue per year by law.

  • As a founding engineer. Want to start a business but don't have the kind of money needed to hire a CTO/funding engineer? Let's talk. I helped bootstraping 2 successful business already (Le Collectionist and Ici Présent!), the next one could be yours! I don't work only for shares, though, there needs to be some sort of monthly income.

FAA is asking for the public's help in finding the "door plug" (that panel that blew open was a "sealed" plug, not actually a usable door as configured) to help with their investigation of the recent 737 MAX 9 event. So if you find it, please let them know and don't sell it on eBay.

My old e-reader had some problems and needed to be replaced. I ended up exploring the hell that is DRM (copy protection) on e-books and tried to break the restraints so I can read my own legally acquired books with FOSS software. I wrote a blog post on it that describes my frustrations (another ideological rant) but hopefully also helps others in a similar position with some practical guidance: https://proycon.anaproy.nl/posts/do-not-restrict-me/

Disgusting is too mild a word for this.
