I sometimes thought my father thought he could't die while he still had books on his pending pile (a stab at immortality I seem to be replicating)... so, it was strangely touching to see Tom Gauld has had similar thoughts.
So there's an award-winning film named Snow In Midsummer that's widely discussed in Taiwan and elsewhere at the moment, it's about Malaysia's 13th May racial riots, an event that my mom experienced firsthand and which is only discussed in hushed tones. Not sure if it'll ever be aired in Malaysia.
I always have a great time in a bar, no matter how many are there.
Boring part ๐
Was just reading up on the Oxford comma, as one does, and was surprised to read that it is more commonly considered to be "mandatory" in American writing styles
When I was in high school - ahem, 40 years ago - we were being taught NOT to use it
I might be wrong but I canโt recall a single time the word โstarโ is uttered or a star features in any plot point of Star Wars. The closest I can think of is shots of the twin suns of Tatooine.
Edit: I was wrong. Death Star, and Starkiller Base are two obvious examples.
This is my regular announcement that you need Tailscale in your life. Iโm here in Korea on my iPhone but Iโm watching Netflix using my Synology NAS back in Oregon as an exit node. Absolutely rock solid personal free VPN and amazing for teams and developers as well. Magical.
If you've ever found yourself missing the "good old days" of the #web, what is it that you miss? (Interpret "it" broadly: specific websites? types of activities? feelings? etc.) And approximately when were those good old days?
No wrong answers โ I'm working on an article and wanted to get some outside thoughts.
Is it a good idea for Ukraine to bomb Russian oil refineries?
@anderspuck has a new analysis, with excellent pionts including this one:
โThe Americans have to learn, that if you are not actually providing weapons to help another country win a war, you also do not get a say in how they fight the war.โ
@anderspuck@randahl Yes, I agree with you. I don't think it's even a good ask or strategy (worrying about gas prices)
I took issue more with the idea that, despite everything the US has done up until now, the moment it can't send missiles because of political issues, it no longer gets to ask for anything
The US has been a critical friend & will continue to be for the future
Democrats are spending a lot of political capital to try to get the aid flowing they could be putting elsewhere
All of this aside - these are real animals, they are painful and sometimes fatal, and you should learn about how to take proper precautions. Just like the fauna in your country
Drop Bears, on the other hand, have no known defense and will kill you before you have time to scream...
At a restaurant in Chinatown and my Spidey sense that alerts me to a Korean-run Japanese restaurant is tingling. (A situation which I like, you get the best of both worlds.) I think the kimchi-filled gyoza is a giveaway.
@timrichards Not to "well, actually" you, but Japanese LOVE kimchi, and you find it all over here
But the bigger truth is, there is a much smaller Japanese diaspora than from other countries, and if you go to a Japanese restaurant outside of Japan, the chefs are probably quite good & trained in Japanese style, but the staff is rarely Japanese
It's #WorldWaterDay.
Billions lack access to safe drinking water. Water conflicts are on the rise. Climate change is worsening extreme hydrologic events, including both floods and droughts. Groundwater used for food production is in shorter and shorter supply. It's time to refocus on the world's most precious resource โ #water โ and move to a more sustainable future. The solutions are out there. It's time to find them, fund them, and scale them up.
@petergleick selling the book on Amazon - one of the companies wasting millions (billions?) of gallons of water to cool their "AI" supercomputers, feels a little ironic
I know, I know...I'm not really blaming you. Just sayin'
