Monsters from the Id! Fish from the Wardrobe! Or something.

(TTRPG/Coding/Linux/Politics/Snark/Woo/ASD, in no particular order.)

Boosts are almost certainly an endorsement of something. Possibly not literally the post in question, though.

What makes you follow people on Mastodon?

fishidwardrobe,
@fishidwardrobe@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@Rasta I mostly follow people who I think will post or boost things that will be interesting. I'm not sure why anyone would do anything else, in general?

fishidwardrobe,
@fishidwardrobe@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@Rasta I'll follow if someone posts or boosts interesting stuff. Or I'll follow if we've had a nice chat, because maybe we can have another one at some point…

fishidwardrobe,
@fishidwardrobe@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@Rasta I'm autistic so I'm bad at the social thing. Sometimes I miss just yelling into the void at Twitter. But it's nice here.

Or: it can be nice here if you don't mind blocking people that aren't nice. I don't mind!

fishidwardrobe,
@fishidwardrobe@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@Rasta I suspect I have ADHD too, and the way they mix in me prevents the worst of both. Or perhaps that's bullshit.

Then again I'm in my fifties and had time to sand the rough edges off my autism. Also, typing is easier than talking…

Back in 2009, there were plans to use DRM to encrypt the UK's digital TV broadcasts.

The Internet went nuts! Long and detailed blog posts opposing the plans were written by FOSS advocates.

Hundreds of commentators vented their spleen online.

Thousands of Twitter users screamed about how evil the plans were.

Do you know how many of them bothered to reply to the official consultation?

Not a typo. Ninety.

fishidwardrobe,
@fishidwardrobe@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@Edent I'm in this picture.

In my case the only things I could have said were "I have a weird way of watching TV and I want you to continue to support it" or "you're clearly over-invested in making money from your product and I don't like it". I may have tried to say that, in fact.

Neither of those is a terribly persuasive argument.

You can think a thing is wrong, and maybe even be right about it, but that's not the same as having an argument that will sway those making the decision.

Meet Cecilia.

Turned up desperately ill, dehydrated and starving on our doorstep a while ago.

Now recovering well from major surgery to remove a huge polyp (hence the still slightly closed eye), thanks to Cats Protection's help.

We've agreed she can move in permanently. 🐈

She and Napoleon will be introduced slowly. Both are pretty un-territorial, they'll adjust to each other.

No way we were going to leave her without a perma-home, after she'd already been abandoned once as a kitten.

Healthy little torty kitty chilling happily on a cardboard scratching block.

DO YOU KNOW WHAT I REALLY, REALLY HATE IS WHEN A GUI APPLICATION IS WRITTEN IN SUCH A WAY THAT ACTIVATING THE SCROLLWHEEL OVER A DROPDOWN MENU WIDGET CAUSES THE SELECTED ITEM IN THE DROPDOWN MENU TO CHANGE ITS CURRENT VALUE

fishidwardrobe,
@fishidwardrobe@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@foone @mcc Openbox does that – but of course you can turn it off in the config file; every keyboard and mouse action is defined there.

Is the use of "app" vs "program" a generational gap/thing when it comes to PC software? I would never use the word "app" for PC software, though I use it for anything related to smartphones, but my son calls everything an app.

fishidwardrobe,
@fishidwardrobe@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@Conatusprinciple Same, but I suspect we're fighting a losing battle, simply because "app" is one syllable.

New blogging from me!

"Cheers is Hell"

After spending 2020 watching every episode of Frasier, we thought we'd binge watch its predecessor sitcom "Cheers". It's a tough watch. It obeys all the familiar tropes of a sitcom - a static location, characters drawn in broad strokes, and whacky banter. On paper, it's great. But on screen... Look, let's get this out of…
