Really pleased to see this post outlining how @devs helps deliver more of the fediverse than any other platform. And the majority of that is done for free, as part of our Fast Forward program for supporting open source and the open web. Best of all, there are lots of different platforms doing this work, exactly as you'd hope — the open web is more competitive and enables lots of different options. https://blog.benjojo.co.uk/post/who-hosts-the-fediverse-instances

@jwz @anildash yeah I keep having to remind people in this industry that cloudflare was protecting a site that was trying to get people killed. And when I complained about this, that site listed my name and address and said something "needed to be done" about me.

Yeah no I don't think we should use them for our site!

I listened to a podcast about the Therac-25 disaster ( where a malfunctioning radiotherapy machine injured several patients ) and I learned the funniest element of this whole situation:

at one point the company that made the thing issued directions on how to work around the error: They told the hospitals to go to their PDP-11 terminals, and remove the "up" key from the keyboards.

If you're trying to hack the code for a hentai game or a IoT sex toy, is that considered perverse engineering?

I wonder how much the push to return to office is companies realizing that given their business practices, having every conversation they have with employees be recordable is probably going to bite them in the end

I've been trying to move out of my old storage unit (because I can't afford it) but it's gotten delayed, and I'm at risk of losing it.

Any donations to help me keep my collection of old computers would be very helpful!

I have a USB-C cable that only works one way. You plug it in, no charging. Flip it 180, It works fine.

This seems wrong

ahh, that fun feeling when you're like "damn it, I need a tool to do X"
and then you realize there is one
and you wrote it

fun fact: if you design a product that takes a barrel-jack plug, and don't specify anywhere if it's center-positive or center-negative, you go to hell when you die

my favorite thing about the XFCE desktop environment is how the network applet pops up these messages all the time and there's a handy dandy "don't show this again" button that does ABSOLUTELY FUCKING NOTHING

You know, the older I get, the more I think about Charles Stross's Laundry Series and how in it, computer science and applied demonology are the same subject, and older experts in this joint field tend to develop spongey brains from accidentally summoning tiny demons in their head.

I'm just saying "your brain doesn't work because your knowledge of programming has caused interdimensional energy beings to manifest in your grey matter" keeps making more and more sense as time goes on.

3d printing makes you realize how big a millimeter is, and video game programming and video editing makes you realize how long a second is.

I need to find more hobbies that'll mess up my other sense of units. I've got space and time, what about weight? density? brightness? temperature?

I wonder if anyone has ever made a key lock where it turns on any key, but provides a value back to the connected computer to tell you the bitting of the key

You can. It's not fast, but it runs.

I'm kinda horribly broke again and need to get back to getting out of my storage units, but at the moment I can't even pay for them, let alone the shelving/truck/time I'd need to be able to move out of them. So if you're able to donate something, that'd be really helpful!

I got recognized at the electronics fair, but the funniest part is that they didn't fully recognize me at first.

Then I mentioned I was planning to do Terrible Things to a keyboard I bought, and THAT'S WHEN they recognized me.

Apparently my reputation precedes me.
