My name is Gabe and I'm here to say, I'm rockin' on the mic every two or three days.

I'm the maintainer and primary developer of #Owncast. I'm generally always happy to talk to you about the project, it means a lot to me.

I'm not on Mastodon, I'm on the Fediverse. So are you.

Our pop-up channel for the FediVision 2024 voting period is live.

It's an alternative way you can hear the entrants if a linear format. It's on our main site below our regular channels.

Keep an eye on @announce and for info, fun and light hearted lobbying.

To kickoff the voting period we'll have chat on for a bit as we are simulcasting our pop-up to the video/chat channel. The community will announce more hangouts fo the week.

Threat models matter.

When a platform/service/app tells you they are “private” or “secure” always ask “from whom?”

Criminals, domestic abusers, law enforcement, data brokers, and intelligence agencies are all different attackers with very different capabilities.

Dear I'd like to create a interactive prototype, nothing complicated, just a simple slider than when I move it, animates a range of simulated LEDs (about 100 of them). My first through was Processing but I'm open to other suggestions.

My issue with any choice is the start up cost, it's usually quite tedious to get started before I can get to the fun part. Any suggestions?

"I think it's great that people are realizing if their social media app isn't talking to the fedi they needn't bother making it."

This is a bad take and you should feel bad for making it.

Snark aside: there's nothing magical about the "fediverse" and there's a lot to improve. Some of the ways that the fediverse has traditionally improved involved people going off and doing their own thing and finding ways to make it fit later.

hrefna,
@hrefna@hachyderm.io avatar

To "talk to the fedi" as most people think of it today involves talking to mastodon.

So what you get is something along the lines of:

  • Implementing an outdated version of HTTP signatures
  • Implementing several things I've been told are "bugs" by members of SWICG.
  • Being unable to implement a large part of the spec in order to interoperate.
  • Holding your breath that nothing breaks on basically every release.

But wait, there's more.

AP itself is controlled by W3 and, uh.

Now that Bluesky is open to the public, I hope developers and publishers give it a second look. It has a lot of good ideas about the future of social networking: https://www.platformer.news/bluesky-public-opening-jay-graber/

docpop,
@docpop@mastodon.social avatar

@CatherineFlick @caseynewton agreed. So far, Bluesky sounds just like Twitter did in 2007. It's nice of them to open their API so developers can grow their platform for them, but what happens when Bluesky inevitably decides to shut off access to the API 5 years?

We really should have learned our lesson by now. https://cybercultural.com/p/twitter-in-2007-the-open-platform/

Folks promoting Bluesky on the fediverse is like the three little pigs doing public relations for the big bad wolf.

But, hey, clearly some folks still haven’t gotten the message that VC and billionaires are bad and that non-corporate spaces have to be protected from corporate ones.

I guess something has to keep the folks who write “what went wrong/if only we’d known” articles in business.

Owncast releases app for iOS and tvOS

Gabe Kangas, creator of the fediverse-connected streaming software Owncast, has announced the release of an iOS and tvOS app for Owncast. This comes some months after Kangas said that the development of the app had been halted due to Apple’s App Store policies. Getting the app approved has been a challenge, and Kangas details the wide variety of ‘reasons’ that Apple has given to reject the app. It took help of a legal firm and persistence from Kangas to get the app in the App Store.

The fact that Owncast did manage to publish an app to the App Store is good news for PeerTube, who are in a process of their own to create their own mobile apps for PeerTube. In PeerTube’s roadmap Framasoft said that publishing a PeerTube app might be tricky, citing Owncast’s experiences.

In the blog Kangas also talks about the identity of the platform, coming right out of the gate by reiterating that Owncast is simply server software to run ‘independent, decentralized, completely standalone video streams’. Building social features such as chat, helping with discovery with the Owncast Directory and now building an app, all help with the awareness of the project. But in the end, Kangas sees Owncast as ‘server software. That’s it’.
